Economising on heating: miserly scrooge or just plain common sense?

How are fellow EADDers getting on with their energy consumption or conservation?

There's probably nothing unusual in the resentment I feel towards the extortionate prices being charged currently, and I'd rather wear extra layers any day than pay through the nose for energy, and see my pay rise disappear into the nothingness of paying 25% or more of my wages just for the "privilege" of keeping warm.

I think today has been the coldest morning and evening of the approaching winter so far. Still a relatively balmly 9 degrees C outside, and I'm just fine wearing extra layers in the evenings. Especially as it will literally save hundreds of pounds if I carry on doing this.

Admittedly It's been very easy so far, but it won't be so easy when it's 0 and sub zero outside for prolonged periods.

The only heating I plan to allow myself for some time is just the bathroom radiator on for for 30-60 minutes pre and during my morning shower.. Otherwise it's bloody cold at 6:30 am, especially considering that I share a communal water mains with my neighbours on either side of me. This means that my shower water suddenly turns into freezing blasts for prolonged and completely unpredictable periods whenever either of those bastards runs their water when I'm trying to have a warm shower.

As I was told in a Nordic winter walking around in -16*C with a -3*C wind-chill factor (so it felt -19*C when you were hit by wind) "There is NO such thing as bad weather only bad choice of clothes"
I honestly find when things go below -10*C it doesn't feel that cold in a weird way, I find 3*C-7*c way more horrific than way below 0*C

did you check that you got your first £66 payment from Liz Truss?

And hot water bottles are nice in bed

British Gas mysteriously broke my account last week so now I can't see fuck all on their website, no bill history, meter readings, nothing at all. Of course they'll still be taking tons of money from my account every month, the money extraction will never go wrong for them will it? How convenient, not suspicious at all...

Extra layers ftw. I’m taking shorter showers too. Hot water bottles at night help. It doesn’t get too cold where I’m at rn though, maybe 5-10c at night/early morning.

I've two cats ans a snake. Worried about the snake. :( Any tips welcome.

Im Lucky, live in warm country, I dont need extra energy neither in summer though I paid 170€ this month. MF
There are people in my country that need extra energy because of their houses or in the Mountains. I live near to the beach. Its warm here.

Three meals right there.

Yeah was discussing about that with friend not that long ago I think there is still humidity around 0, cause I also felt here winter -15*C were like dry, but like said around 0 there are variables like shifting water or mist to Ice and backward, winds,
Great reminder and sentence about clothes and weather

At -10 and lower the air humidity is very low hence the perception of it feeling cold kinda vanishes.

As soon as something drips out of your nose it will freeze instantly on your clothes...
Plus when you breathe -20 air in it will take your breathe away so to speak.
You need a scarf in front of your mouth.

True, about humidity as I said, but again winters were couple times in a couple days in January -22 I remember with friend listening Black Sabbath and trying to find some club, also we were walking and I didn't drip a drop from my nose as that event was 10 years ago 12 to be exact, and I was breathing normal, ok, not normal but I didn't have scarf. That I remember, but def. was breathing in hands or however it was! From 2011 we had only two or three minuses that far from 0.
Today we have this whole screens that tells us the weather for tomorrow and they almost get right
Let's say I followed your advice on scarf from future(now) cause I have couple of them or from all Football teams

Lol ya’ll acting like that’s cold.. -20C is normal in winters around here. I have to work out in it, with water I may add. Keeping water unfrozen at those temps is a fun task. Now imagine getting your hands and clothes wet.

Yes I am receiving those payments, but I still stand to pay over £2000 in energy bills if my consumption is the same as previous years. "Fuck that" is my sentiment. That's the kind of money that should be spent on the nice things in life, not on essentials.

Extra layers it is for now.

I got my bedroom fireplace bricked up and plastered over a few years ago, thinking I'd never need it again.

The whole self-sufficiency thing appeals even more at times like this; having your own wood supply and wood burner would be just the job this winter.

Hopefully this 'energy crisis' will level out and improve over the next couple of years. It doesn't bear entertaining the thought that things might only get worse and worse year after year.
