It's turned out the hdd is full. My own fault for being lazy and not making a separate partition for the OS some years ago

Ran boot repair and now it doesn't detect any OS

Booted from a thumb drive and can see my locked 1g hdd but cannot cd/ into it no matter what I try

Running boot repair directly from a hdd now and with some luck I will regain grub access and can delete enough files to make it boot, hopefully...
 
I got the most important stuff off it in the end - ~90% of my net worth and took an external hdd from its case and installed it in the laptop and did a nice fresh Ubuntu install

Put the locked up drive in a hdd case and will unpick it in my own time. There's some pics and music that I Wana recover

Good job. You sound like you know what you're doing with Ubuntu. I've been running it for years and prefer it to Windows in many ways although I really haven't bothered to learn much about doing any techy stuff on it yet.

I'm on 18.04 at the moment and it's started freezing if i have too many internet tabs open. I'm Thinking of updating to the new version 22.04.

Any idea if that would wipe all my data if I was to do that?

Not at all, update in the terminal and it will be fine

However, I'd advise backing up all data, reformatting and running with a clean install and then back loading your data for best performance

Latest version is fire based on my few hours since I installed it

I'm Irish but was in love with this beautiful Yorkshire lass Kaz in the uk She was obsessed with Stella, a Stella beer fridge for the cans box's of Stella all the time so I became a convert for her benefit/on her orders lol 😂 worked out great all round but I never understood the obsession??
