Initially I agreed with this thought, but in the last few days as the overwhelming and utterly depraved barbarity of the Russian soldiers has come to light it’s very difficult to not ask dark questions about the Russian soul or culture or character more generally.^ Sounds kinda messed up to "cancel" an entire culture just because a psychopath in power made damnable decisions.
Of course one can’t say “all Russians are X” any more than you could for Americans or Australians - yet for more than a century Western countries have abhorred, eradicated in themselves, and fought to destroy elsewhere such institutionalised barbarism. Bar a few isolated incidents like My Lai and possibly some incidents by Australian special forces in Afghanistan that will certainly be prosecuted, Western soldiers just don’t rape, pillage and murder as part of a total war strategy.
The Ukrainian President might have been right to lay blame on Russian mothers for raising such monsters on such a scale.
We have long tended to separate ‘nazis’ from ‘Germans’ - but the nazis never could have emerged from a different culture. Perhaps that is also true of the Russian army and Russian culture.
