Film What's the Last Film You Saw? v. Tell Us What You Thought!

I really enjoyed Hell or High Water. I guess it's referred to as a 'neo-western' or whatever? Similar to No Country for Old Men. I dig it.

One thing I forgot to mention about On the Waterfront is how Brando's character reminded me of Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke or Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. That non-conformist vibe.

@Jerry Atrick

One of my favourite directors.

Big Trouble in Little China and Escape from New York (not LA) are both classics.
I watched Big Trouble as a kid. Need to watch it again.

Also need to make time for Escape from NY. Thanks for the reminders!

@birdup I highly recommend They Live if you haven't seen it, another JC film I mentioned above in this thread a few months ago.

4/5 solid sci-fi movie

It borrows a lot of tropes and cliches from several other sci fi movies, but it recycles them well and overall remains very original. Great space theme, visuals and soundtrack. Doesn't go overboard with crazy future technology, seems realistic to 30-50 years from now. Must watch for any fan of sci fi or space.

Sounds interesting.Must check .Sci-fi movies are always atractive for me

Hand Rolled Cigarette (2020)

A recent Hong Kong action flick, revolving around an ex-soldier who works for a Triad boss, and his struggles to right the wrongs of his life and atone for his sins. I never saw any of the old-school Shaw Brothers movies to give any comparison, but I'll just say that I felt this was a mad decent output from a new director, with minimal kowtowing to the Chinese Communist Party. Usually Chinese films have overt Confucius "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" type vibes but that was not present here, and it was refreshing; albeit, perhaps this 'dark underbelly' view of Hong Kong has it's own political agenda, of making the mainlanders think that HK is a shithole rife with trash.

Anyways, pretty damn good for what it was. Worth a watch if you dig action flicks but wana branch out.

Black & White in Color (1976)

The winner of the 1976 Best Foreign Film Oscar, this film is a black comedy of sorts about a French settlement in Africa circa WWI who, upon finding out they are at war with the Germans, mount a silly and overzealous campaign to raise a small army and overthrow their neighboring German settlement. White ignorance and pride are on full display as the natives are thrown this way and that for the silly whims of French patriotism.

It was enjoyable enough, short, easy to follow, and a funny take on a segment of WWI I'd never thought much about. I somehow doubt it was the best foreign film of '76 but, you know the Academy.

Watchmen (2009)

I'd seen this one before but had forgotten most of the plot. In the current oversaturated MCU bland bullshit environment we live in, this film seems ahead of its time. The near three hour run time was lambasted in 2009... in 2019 somehow those same picky people sat through three hour Avenger films that I'm certain were of less interest.

The plot revolves around an alternate history where masked vigilante took on the roles of the police and superheroes in the 1930s onward, yet only one character in the film was truly a 'superhero', the rest were men and women who were just better than other humans. We get a lot of lore/backstory for most of the first half, which I found riveting as an 'alternate-history' lover. The second half was more the action and plot development you'd expect out of a modern MCU/DC film.

In this alternate history, Richard Nixon has eliminated term limits and brought the world to the brink of nuclear annihilation. Somehow Afghanistan is at the center of contention (which makes sense in the context of the Soviets invading in the '70s, but doesn't give reason why America cares about it more with Nixon vs Carter/Reagan) which is all too apt given the current geopolitical climate. In essence, the film revolves around questions of humanity and conscious, with the only superhero, Dr. Manhattan, becoming increasingly detached from humanity as his god-like power pulls him further and further from the trivial matters of humanity.

In the end, it did feel a bit long-winded. They could have shaved the finally act down by at least ten minutes without harming the film.

But compared to any recent MCU or DC film? This is leagues beyond them. This film kept me in the seat, holding in my pee; no other superhero flick can make that claim, as I normally detest them. A great film for those who dislike what has become of the superhero genre.

Has anyone seen Eternals yet? I tried but only made it through about 30 minutes or so. My eyes were hurting from rolling so much.

Eternals.

My God, fuck this film... but - then again - thank God that I finally realized how hollow and pointless all this super hero shit is.

Why do they have Indian accents and Irish accents if they're over 7k years old?

What a load of absolute horse shit.

Fuck this film.

Fuck it in it's stupid ass.

I think it's inaccurate to group ALL superhero shit together. Watch Endgame or Winter Soldier then watch Eternals. Not even close.

Avengers is pretty stupid, too. One of the main characters throws a shield at people. Avengers is definitely less stupid than Eternals, but it's still stupid.

I'm tired of watching Hollywood people in tight costumes zapping each other with magical powers. There's not much difference between Hollywood audiences and wrestling fans. People always say wrestling is fake, but it's actually less fake than the movies.

Endgame was better than the other Avenger films.

I'm looking forward to Spiderman: No Way Home.

There are superhero franchises I still appreciate, but these latest Marvel films. Captain Marvel, Eternals, Wonder Woman. They are all fucking awful because they're being adapted from awful source material.

The name - Captain Marvel - is pretty much the laziest thing somebody (who works at a comic book company called Marvel) could come up with.

What's the next Marvel TV show?

Ms. Marvel.

Most of the time they make female characters in comic books they just flip the gender of a male character. Batgirl. Supergirl. Spider-Woman. She-Hulk. Aquagirl. Batwoman. Etc.

I think there's a female version of every male superhero character.

There's also some male versions of female characters (like Wonder-man), but they don't account for a large portion of our big hitters... Although, I guess, even the original female characters seriously lack inspiration. It baffles me to see modern women embracing Wonder-woman for so many reasons.

I don't like the combined Marvel universe. I don't think they should squash beloved franchises together like that. It'd be better if these super teams actually made sense.

Think about the line-up in Justice League & The Avengers. Superman needs Batman's help? Thor needs Hawkeye?

Also, they keep having to come up with these ridiculous excuses. In Eternals, they ask the question why they didn't help out with Thanos during the Endgame shit... and they explain that they were told not to interfere in any human affairs that don't involve the deviants.

Here's an idea: don't have Star Wars, Monkey Island and Indiana Jones exist in the same universe. That way you don't have to find some stupid fucking reason to justify it.

Why the fuck is Kumail Nanjiani a super hero? He's about as convincing as slapping a costume on a fucking housecat... but, hey, they exceeded their diversity quota.

There's even a deaf character in Eternals, Makkari.

In the comics, the character was a white male who could hear. Now the character is a black deaf woman. She is deaf because her ability is super speed and she can move faster than the sound barrier. According to this logic: Superman should be deaf and blind.

There's also a gay character. They should have Superman transition into Superwoman in the next Man of Steel film.

Maybe the next Batman film could include a hand-job from Robin? (Actually, I would pay to see that.)

Sicario 1 + 2

One of my favorite crime/action movies of all time. I'm very fond of them and have watched both 3 times. Filmed where I grew up on the Mexican border where I used to score from cartel connected guys, nostalgic for me. AMAZING cast, hyper realistic plot and action (relatively for a movie). Great cinematography. Great soundtrack, haunting! Memorable characters.

Who doesn't love Benicio and Hamlin??

I watched the original Hangover film last night. Had me in tears, sad tears... but only because I was recalling my first time seeing it, in 2009 in theaters; how young and naïve I was. I guess I cried because waahhhh, 12 years have elapsed.

Classic comedy that helped cement what I call the 'raunchy' sub-genre of comedies.
