I abuse Dxm from ages 14.5 to right around my 16th birthday. 18.5 now. I started out taking 600mg probably once a month. Then I combined it with weed right before my 15th bday and was tripping heavily for 2 weeks it felt like. 2 months after my 15th I was back on using 600mg of Dxm once a month at 140lbs body weight . Around 15.5 I was taking 600mg every week. And continued this till my 16th birthday when they put me on Prozac for 3 days and I became extremely manic lasting for a few months. I haven’t gone back to normal since completely but if you check my other thread about meth use that played a part too. Am I too far gone? What can be done?

I did quite a lot more drugs than that in that timeframe, and before and was pretty much fine afterwards

what do you mean you are not normal, what's going on?

Extreme anger outburst where I feel suicidal and lash out on my family, then calm down and feel more hopeful and apologize to them. Racing thoughts, anxiety, rumination, inability to sit still and relax. Obsessing constantly and feeling hopeless

yeah, you need to talk to a doctor, this isn't from a few years of drug use

that's all I can really tell you man

You genuinely think so? I was not like this before the drug use though, I can notice a sharp difference
Look, you're young.. and I'm not a doctor, but no - that is not normal only after extreme meth use and at that point the person is in stim psychosis typically after not sleeping for several days , which I don't think is going on here...

I can only speculate man which is not that helpful her

I was like this before the meth use, I have been talking to a doctor and I’m on gabapentin right now which helps me sleep and my anxiety. What do you think could be going on here? If you had to speculate

honestly? that you're either overstating symptoms or you have some major mental illness going on already, or you do a lot more drugs than I imagine.
Not overstating symptoms for sure as this all happened, I’ve been in the psych ward for this many times, as ashamed as I am to admit this. What major mental illness does this sound like? It’s been so bad I cannot keep an erection and I don’t know what’s wrong with me

well, now it makes sense now man, you shouldn't be

I knew something was missing
They are trying to say I’m bipolar man. Do you think that could be the cause then? Really don’t think it’s the drugs? I’m so scared I’ll never be normal and functioning at this point

@Stimfreak2234 it does sound like you have Bipolar as your doctors have said, and that it was triggered and/or worsened by the drugs. I have Bipolar 2 myself and the worst hypomanic episode I have ever had was also worsened significantly by antidepressants and DXM (I believe I was 16 at the time as well, same as you.)

Prozac and DXM are both known to worsen and/or trigger mania in Bipolar individuals with this theorized to be due to the serotonin reuptake inhibition caused by both. But there is no evidence that they can cause Bipolar in healthy individuals who are not at risk of developing bipolar. With a neurotypical individual, the mania would generally only be triggered by high doses and go away once the drug was out of their system and serotonin levels returned to baseline. You need to be at risk of disorders like bipolar or schizophrenia to develop them - though methamphetamine abuse can cause long-term psychosis that is somewhat similar in severe cases.

I want to emphasize that having Bipolar does not mean that you cannot lead a normal, functioning life. Plenty of successful people and celebrities suffer from Bipolar and other mental illnesses. This can range from ordinary people to famous scientists or actors/writers/musicians. Bipolar is actually exceedingly common in the music industry. Many famous people in history are also believed to have suffered from the disorder, such as Isaac Newton, Vincent Van Gogh, and Ludwig van Beethoven. I'm not saying that the lives of any of these people are what you will experience or what you should even aim for - as everyone is different and has different goals in life - but you can be extraordinarily successful with or without bipolar disorder.

Getting treatment is obviously important. Overmedication can be an issue and you should advocate for yourself and try to start with the milder meds like Lamictal before you jump straight to something like high-dose Lithium or antipsychotics that will have a heavy side effect profile. Just remember that when left unmedicated, the disorder will often worsen and mania can cause permanent brain damage over time. A good, very high-profile example of a bright individual with untreated severe bipolar (and possibly other mental illnesses) is Kanye West. It is pretty clear to everyone at this point that he has deteriorated significantly over the past two decades, with much of said deteroriation attributable to his untreated mental illness.

So my advice to you is this: Get some treatment. Therapy and light medication is a good start. Ensure that you maintain strong, healthy relationships with family and friends if you have a support system. Get into a sleep schedule. Consider getting into a routine of exercise, meditation, and maybe a healthy diet. And finally, lay off the drugs where possible.

DXM, SSRIs, stimulants (depending on the person, but generally recreational use should be avoided), PCP-derivatives, and alcohol are among the worst offenders for people with bipolar. Psychedelics really depend on the person. They moderate episodes for some and trigger them for others. Generally psychedelics and stimulants are more of an issue for those with type 1 Bipolar than type 2, but plenty with type 1 have no issue with these drugs and plenty of people with type 2 can have disastrous reactions.

Best of luck,

Do you think I would’ve gotten bipolar without the drug use? And can it go away at this point or it’s unlikely to?

That really depends and there is no way to be sure. But yes, you most likely would have gotten bipolar either way. And it isn't going to go away, but you will have periods of euthymia/stability and it can be managed using the support systems and strategies I suggested.

Okay. So I started using DXM when I was 13, and after first using it it probably only took me about 2 weeks to start using it every day. I feel like I’ve gone through most of not all positive and negative effects from it. I got to using (idk how much exactly) but I’d say I used a few thousand mg every day. Sometimes less than others, sometimes more. The most I ever took was 4 big bottles of delsym in the same sitting I was 14 and it was a total nightmare. I love drugs but being THAT high, is never fun. Buuut when I got older I started to use it again (I didn’t have a olerence bc I hadn’t been using it because I progressed to “harder” drugs) I was on an SSRI (Zoloft for depression) so I took 1 big bottle of cough syrup, being as I didn’t have a tolerance I knew this would be enough. It wasn’t working and it had passed the hour mark so I was like maybe it’s because I’m older? So I drank another. Then out of nowhere it all hit me at once, stronger than it ever had before. I had an ego death, I od’d and almost died, and I also had psychosis. I won’t go into too much detail bc honestly it’s pretty boring. But I did realize after putting much though into why it effected me so bad, I realized I took it while I was actively taking my depression meds. Apparently you are never supposed to mix cough syrup while being on depression meds even just a normal dose for colds (specifically ssri’s) I started using at a really young age so honestly I never respected warnings and human body responses as much as I should’ve I guess I just thought I was invincible. The cough syrup took longer to kick in,and it’s lasted forever, it must’ve been weeks before I felt completely normal again, but when it did kick in it was stronger than any drugs I’ve ever been on even fentanyl. So to sum it up, everything you are experiencing is normal. I know it might feel like it will never go away , but anything feels long, especially when your normal gets taken away. It’s okay, just in the future don’t get high off it anymore, and if you have to get high off it maybe lower your dose (I don’t ever think it’s a good idea especially since I’m not a psychiatrist to advice to take yourself off of meds) but I would rather tell you to get off of the medication before getting high off of the dxm. I understand not being able to stop getting high and being willing to take risks you might not even be aware of to get high. But from experiences like these I realized sometimes for your mental you just need to be kinder to your body and be as safe as possible when it comes to drugs so you can at the very least enjoy your trip. Whatever you decide to do just don’t mix them together because it won’t only increase the risk of temporary (or even permanent) psychological damage by 100000, but it also increases the chances of physical damage, even OD. So just be careful, but just real ax and I’m sure you will be okay if I am.

No! You might be bipolar but dim usage especially if heavy or mixing with SSRIS can make it seem like you have medical conditions that you really dont, especially bipolar. When I got high off of cough syrup while on my depression meds I got soooo manic, and I was convinced I was bipolar. But once I sobered up, eventually the mood changes went away as my brain returned to its normal chemicals. A lot of people who use do have coco curing disorders, BUT a lot of drugs can also make you seem like you have mental health issues that you really don’t. For example, people who use meth are VERY similar to those who suffer from schizophrenia. If you take the drugs away, of course they’ll be different after long term use, but your brain will eventually normalize itself again.
