How did sex work exist previous to condoms and birth control?

I look to the learned minds of BL.

Called "the worlds oldest profession", but woah before availability of condoms and disease preventative measure, I think we can agree with its reputation of being considered "the worlds dirtiest profession".

Of course it's not like that in modern times and it's coming to be considered even a legitimate form of work and income.

Back when, sex workers were predominantly considered disease vectors, but again that's something that has been perhaps even largely eliminated in modern times.

So, before modern technology, how did the trade go?

Simply a lot of illegitimate abortions, suffering with venereal disease and short life spans?

Outlier is right, condoms were originally made of sheepskin. We now know this is not the most reliable material to make a condom. Lambskin is penetrable, and semen can permeate it. Lambskin condom users report a reduction in pleasurable sensations compared to latex condoms. Thus, however ineffective they may be, lambskin condoms remain on the market, next to their latex cousins.

I would imagine that back alley abortions, performed by non-qualified persons, were rampant amongst sex workers. Sex workers likely also took the advice of other “Ladies of the Night” re: the details of successful self-abortion techniques.

Syphillis was widespread and often yielded a death sentence, back in the day. It wasn’t until the advent of antibiotics in the 1940s, that there was cure for Syphillis.

Though it’s quite glamorized by Hollywood, I believe sex workers, especially those that work on the streets, have a very rough life to this day.

There have always been home remedies/traditional medicine forms of contraception. Science has tested some and found them to be somewhat effective. Others not so much. Regular women needed them as much as prostitutes. Some examples from very ancient world here: https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/83685/9-forms-birth-control-used-ancient-world. Some more recent medieval period methods here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_contraception?wprov=sfti1

Social attitudes towards prostitution have not always been as puritanical as they are now and it was not necessarily seen as a ‘dirty’ profession in many times and places. Particularly given there are often different classes of prostitute ranging from penny a go in the back lane behind the pub type ones to ones kept as courtesans by the aristocracy and who could mingle in high society quite easily.

As a female in the past I imagine sex work was one of the most dangerous professions alive.

Disease (fatal at the time), violence, social ostracization, evil men killing you for birthing their child.... fuck

Crocodile dung has a natural spermicide. First implemented in Egypt. Not surprising the trend is no longer "trendy". As far as STD control, IDK.

Men used to satisfy their urges with farm animals like sheep or even dogs. It's possible some of them even thought it was safer too - or less risk. This is how we got syphilis.

I feel like modern day planned parenthood centers are under fire. This is actually kind of interesting, the political war going on in modern eugenics.

Lol, yeah this is gnarly to think about but I imagine you might be right, I hadn't considered this before.

“We know, for example, that gonorrhoea came from cattle to humans. Syphilis also came to humans from cattle or sheep many centuries ago, possibly sexually”. The most recent and deadliest STI to have crossed the barrier separating humans and animals has been HIV, which humans got from the simian version of the virus in chimpanzees.

Sheep skin was used as a condom back in ancient times, which did prevent pregnancy but not diseases caused by viruses or small bacteria. Because of the pores in the sheepskin. Also, there was only one treatment back in those days for every disease was faith healing/energy medicine or whatever the particular culture called it, which obviously was quite ineffective to say the least. So, usually that meant that catching any sort of serious disease would automatically lead to death.

Herbal remedies..Parsley can cause abortion of a early pregnancy for an example . (Inserted into vagina.)

Also, fun fact: Dolphins are one of the few species who are known for having recreational sex as well!
My sister used to brag that some dolphin at Seaworld had a crush on her. She’s the oldest of 5 kids and she would always tell us, “Dolphins are very sexual and one wants me!”
When my sister would keep claiming that the dolphin was crushing on her and everyone was sick of hearing about it, my brother finally said, “I’m pretty sure it’s cause you smell like fish!”

I’m so glad I only witnessed this interchange and I never participated in the conversation.

Just to be clear, HIV came from eating chimps, not fucking them.
Flashback to my elementary school where they showed us a rather disturbing video and said "HIV came from a bite from a chimp".

I always felt the details were a little odd, considering. Eating them makes more sense. That would make me assume, though, that whatever consumption was either raw or undercooked.

How can we be sure lol. I would like to believe otherwise..
One's more logical, I would think. I've read a bit about Jane Auston and the relationships between apes and humans (for lack of a better phrase) and the relationships I've seen between Chimpanzees and humans were sordid according to sceptics, sure- yeah. But I doubt the relationships that were anything other than banal were not worthwhile (to mention let alone consider). I guess it depends on who you read and consider your source. Chimpanzee's being eaten seems more likely to me than them being fucked.
