Megathread Cultural Appropriation and Cancel Culture Discussion

Perhaps it's about time that these 'woke' fuckers actually woke up and realised that bitching about statues, names of buildings and what letter of the alphabet to identify their cultural and sexual identity as is fuckin pathetic, and realise that there is actually serious shit going on in the background.

I fuckin hate the world and everyone in it...

Not to detract from this thread but just noted something as a result of the above link and which is very interesting and very recent. Didn't realize things were actually moving on this and would not have noticed were it not for the above post.



Don't mind me and ignore this for now maybe. But amendments to Section 230 are going to have consequences that could be far reaching. Probably going to end up having its own thread sooner or later.

The same GA citizens losing out on the millions the All-Star Game brings to Atlanta, because MLB got woke?
The same GA citizens losing out when Delta starts moving it's business after getting it's tax benefits cut for getting woke?
Feel free to meet me in the GA thread to cover any actual voter restrictions the new laws created.

IMO corporate activism is a non-starter.

MLB is a capitalistic enterprise. They are making the decision that is best for their bottom line. Republicans respect that right?

Ditto from above. Plus tax cuts are God's gift to corporations, they'd be fools not to take them right? The money they save will trickle down to the consumer.

People aren't corporations. State legislators aren't corporations. They're not supposed to be tens of thousands of tax payer dollars to write letters to Coke.

Not a hassle if this isn't a thread worth having but dont think it fits in the gender or race thread , ill delete if its crap.

I get theres this pretty ridiculous barrage of folk who are unable to understand any form of humour in entertainment industries that have brought so much laughter to many more people.


I get that its not everyone's thing having stereotypical characters of minority origin being exaggeratedly from that culture.

I dont care though and would prefer to have the jokes and fun than being bored shitless by thundering Karens.

Hank Avzaria has played many characters and is a good actor and voice over, enough to have made a fortune from playing characters that are memorable. Sort of, Apu stands out more than the guy from Mad about you.

So ..to now feel like he has to then take a dump on Apu either to appease some who now dont find The Simpson's funny or whatever reason, what next, apologising for playing anyone at all?

Different regions all have their different ways. Id really love to see a show worth watching that includes as much cultural diversity that some demand and pull it off using actors who are all the exact same match everything wise as their characters , the characters themselves being politically correct and woke to the point of doing nothing at all interesting.

Apu was great, why apologise? If anything, the Yanks should for Meryl Streep's hideous attempt at playing Linda Chamberlain.

Couldn't agree more. Stereotypes are by definition, stereotypical. Everyone has an Apu at the corner of their street. To ignore that fact is to deny the contribution of thousands of immigrant entrepreneurs. I bet the majority of people complaining about Apu are white, privileged, bleeding heart fucktards with nothing better to whinge about.

To feel the need to apologise is ridiculous.
 
I think it's really interesting to observe what is deemed inappropriate and what everyone is okay to let pass. There are stereotypes like Apu or worse across thousands of books, tv shows, movies, etc.

I think Forrest Gump got cancelled too because he was played by the neurotypical actor Tom Hanks. And I guess it was inappropriate that the whole point of the movie was to laugh at how dumb he was.

When I heard about the Forrest Gump thing, my mind immediately went to other movies I loved growing up, such as What's Eating Gilbert Grape? and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Both of these movies have the same issue as Gump but have managed to go unscathed as far as I can tell.

Not to mention shows like Family Guy and South Park. Somehow they continue to exist in this climate because they have made it a point to brand themselves as offensive. That's their thing. But again, look at Big Gay Al, Timmy, Chef, Mr. Garrison, etc. All just as bad as Apu... yet no apologies coming from Matt or Tre (or Comedy Central/Viacom).
 
Apu is funny, enough said.

I guess Azaria will obviously hand back to the creators of the Simpson's his entire pay check, keeping it would not show how sincere his regret is.

Maybe then he will not be seen as jumping on the bandwagon to grease the wheels for more money.
