So, I've been debating if I want to or not, and when I close out of the BestBuy page I start thinking about it again, and open the page back up. (not saying I will get one from there, just where I am at).
They look really fun, and have always been a huge fan of Mario games, and Zelda. If I were to get a Nintendo Switch then those would be the games I would mostly play first. Have been pricing them, and have been leaning towards the grey-con controller setup. I dig the red, but grey seems more low-key.
So does anyone on here have a Nintendo Switch, or know anything about it?
Yes, I have had mine for about three years. I knew there was a risk I would spend about $300 dollars on the setup only to find it collecting dust. I used to spend hours every day of the week playing console video games. But over the last five years, my interest has waned, and the consoles are largely dormant. I had just landed a killer job that meant a Boston->SoCal flight and its return every two weeks for prolly six months. That seems ideal for a switch, as it is highly portable with a lenient battery life. The second week in, I started drinking on a Friday afternoon. Before a week passed, I had gone through my second chance, and I was terminated. Somehow, the Switch was still with me, and as I was doing the intake at a "sanitarium", I did more smooth talking and they let me have my switch while I was inpatient for about seven days. That was when I really came to love having a portable gaming device.
I find I play games on it far more than my PlayStation, and the games I play are usually indie games, for which Nintendo has really built up a strong library and community to support it.
What are some of the perks, and cons?
I like it for its balance.
Handheld, you have a nice, juicy, large and vibrant screen right in front of you. More interesting than staring at screen on your phone. It is comfortable to operate handheld, and sometimes I have eight hour sessions that way.
But I can also pop the controllers off, drop it in its dock, and play on my 60" Sony X900H UHD TV, and my eyes feel like my mouth does when I eat Starbursts. Especially the big titles you like, Zelda and Mario stuff.
The battery is viable for a fairly long time.
The storage is microSD based, thus expandable and portable. When I travel I use the same card for both my Switch and my digital SLR camera.
It uses a USB-C style adapter and it is the only thing I own that does, so there is a dearth of charges for it around my apartment.
Are you able to play online with friends? Maybe even friends from other countries?
With some games, yes. But it is not going to rival a PlayStation or XBox for this. Nintendo's game network is just not as awesome sauce ad Sony's or Microsoft's. With less online titles in the library, there are less users to play with. It works, but if you are used to playing Call of Duty with your fantasy football team for three hours every day, you probably wont find that experience on this platform.
But, if it is playing with you quarantine buddies that you are after, it beats the consoles for split screen action. Some titles really shine in this area, like Mario Kart. Also, for a low key, low stress that gets progressively intense, check out Kingdom Two Crowns, it has a coop mode to play with your spouse. It is not competitive and this is more approachable for some players.
What if I don't have any wifi, am I still able to play the damn thing?
Yeah, this is where it has an edge over most console titles. Most of the games can be played completely offine.
Also, my favorite game on the darn thing is Steamworld Dig 2. Totally oldshchool, with chunky pixelated graphics. My inner ControlDaddy just squeals for it.
