Global Politics China Discussion

As cringey as the Little Pinks are in defence of thin-skinned narcissists in Beijing, they're really starting to annoy some of China's neighbours:

THE ASIAN VOLUNTEER ARMY RISING AGAINST CHINA’S INTERNET TROLLS

It all started with a retweet. In April, Thai TV star Vachirawit “Bright” Chivaaree reposted a series of four urban landscapes shot by a Thai freelance photographer, one of which called Hong Kong a country.

It was a controversial move by Vachirawit, whose TV show 2gether: The Series — a romance drama revolving around two male college students — had been a hit in mainland China since it premiered in late February. A torrent of online abuse followed his retweet. Chinese fans slid into Vachirawit’s Instagram and other social media with comments “correcting” him. Vachirawit — like many before him worried about losing out on the Chinese market — apologized.

But then Vachirawit’s rumored girlfriend, Thai influencer Weeraya Sukaram — who goes by the name Nnevvy on Twitter — retweeted a Thai-language post asking why China would not let foreigners investigate whether or not the coronavirus had originated in a Chinese lab.

That was it. Vachirawit’s outraged fans were replaced by a team of Chinese internet trolls, known as the Little Pinks, says James Buchanan, a researcher specializing in Thai politics at the City University of Hong Kong. The Little Pinks, known for their aggressive trolling, pointed to an exchange between Weeraya and Vachirawit on Instagram in 2017 that they claimed implied Taiwan isn’t part of China.

The online hate grew. The number of Vachirawit’s followers on Weibo dropped from more than 600,000 to 430,000 in a couple of days. The insults multiplied on platforms otherwise banned in China, such as Twitter and Instagram, revealing the official support the troll army enjoys.

Over the past few years, China’s troll armies have bullied and coerced countries, organizations and individuals into self-censoring or taking back anything they’ve publicly said that is critical of the Communist Party. A tweet last year by Daryl Morey, general manager of the Houston Rockets, that supported Hong Kong’s anti-extradition protests dragged the NBA into a diplomatic row with China, a major market for the basketball association. Morey deleted his tweet and the NBA apologized.

But in the case of Vachirawit and Weeraya, the Chinese trolls hadn’t bargained for what happened next. Thai netizens used self-deprecating humor to counter the insults hurled by their online adversaries, winning, according to independent experts, this 21st-century war that’s being fought entirely online.

Another Chinese troll army, the 50 Cent Army, tried to take the Thai digital activists on. But the Thai were quickly joined by activists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines and other nations in what was dubbed the Milk Tea Alliance — a reference to the milky tea drunk by people in those nations...

Like most CEP discussions, it started with me reading an interesting article that seemed legit:

Sounds like China is really pissed @ Taiwan and the USA. They claim that Taiwan belongs to China, and the USA believes that Taiwan is their own country, while China is flexing their military strength to provoke.

What do you think? Do you think that this will be the next 'big conflict'?
Will be an interesting ride.

Shit, Fallout was right.

But it kind of makes sense, now that the USA have voted for such a weak president. I get it, you just wanted get rid of the oranged-haired buffoon, but Trump's "plop furry balls menacingly on the table"-tactics actually worked wonders with all the power-crazed dictators around the world, with Biden the US just appears ripe for the taking. He's a 'nice' old man, that's not someone you want to be ruling one of the most powerful nations in the world.

America is all bark no bite. Real question is what the UN would do if China annexes Taiwan.

I would be scared of China in a war. They are way ahead of the west in quantum computing and quantum communication (which is next gen encryption).

China was holding back when Trump was in office because they seemed worried about Trump being unpredictable. Now it seems like they are really pushing it with Biden in office. I don't think they are intimidated of the USA anymore.

Me personally 'If' China decides to invade Taiwan then it could very well be the start of WW3. Which scares the shit out of me. Russia could very well join China and the outcome of it all would cost millions if not billions of lives.

Pfft trump was an erratic whack job. If war breaks out I don't want him in office.

We need a strong leader, trump isn't that. He was a crazy wanna be dictator who flip-flopped his personality in the debates when one style didn't work. Perceiving him as strong is a joke.

Is Biden a strong leader? Probably not, but he's sane, and that's enough for me to rather risk him in the chair should war break out. Trump would probably use war as an excuse to try and stay in office for life.

And at least Biden might just give a shit about the American life's his actions could cost. Unlike trump who presided over more avoidable loss of American life than any president in a hundred years.

Trying to keep it on the topic @JessFR :)

Looks to me like Taiwan is really starting to become a bit nervous with China breathing down their neck. Hopefully it is all show and nothing happens. D:

russia would never help china in a war. Learn some geopolitics of the area. Putin does not trust china china wants to steal a whole bunch of russian land aswell the russians are using the Chinese for now to support there economy. Russia the world keeper of true peace and will be our greatest ally to wipe out the communists in the future.

Sorry but this is extremely misleading reporting, both airspaces are overlapping.

I swear this style of reporting has been going for ages regarding China, especially from US/UK outlets. It's the US that has been stirring the conflict all this time, this is one of many things in the line of the China cold war fueling it even more. And so what if they're flexing somewhat, USA does it all the time, but nobody here cares.

I sometimes think TripSitter is a Russian sleeper agent. For being a New Zealander, he often sounds like he is in reality a Soviet propaganda poster with typing fingers.

No offense meant, buddy. But seriously, you have actually said "all hail Putin" more than once recently.

I've noticed this too.

The Tiawanese issue will be solved eventually but not militarily, the Chinese could take it in a couple of days if they wanted to. The Taiwanese military know this and they know the USA would do nothing. It is all part of the show. China has even built a mock up of the Tiawanese presidential palace that they invade periodically hollywood style. So long as China and Taiwan don't provoke each other too much, the weird high stakes dance goes on.

Instead the Chinese are taking a slow approach, It makes economic sense for Taiwanese to work with China and leave behind Chiang Kai-Shek the kuomintang and all that associated bullshit and baggage of the Chinese civil war and forget the WW2 collaboration with the occupying Japanese (which wasn't Chiang Kai-shek). I have visited Taiwan many times, it is not Chinese but there are a lot of descendents of chinese people who collaborated with the Japanese in Shanghai and elsewhere that fled to Taiwan in 49. The current generation is getting very integrated into China they are recognised as chinese citizens by the PRC. The times are a changin.

The USA is playing the old game of blaming someone else for its own internal problems and trying to stir up shit, whether it is Russia Russia Russia or China China, it plays well to the peanuts gallery. The USA's problems are of its own making. The US unipolar era is over, the USA and its cheerleaders just haven't realized.

As someone who grew up in Beijing, perhaps I can shed some light on this whole Taiwan thing.

I believe it is highly unlikely that there will be a full blown invasion of Taiwan. It simply does not make sense as China would incur extremely high losses (though they would take Taiwan if it came down to it) and they do not want a hot war with the United States or the universal condemnation/sanctions that would come with it. The PRC has been saber rattling for the past seven decades. With that said, I do believe that with the foment of nationalist sentiment under Xi Jin Ping and his adoption of "Wolf Warrior Diplomacy" it is entirely possible that we could see a limited war in the next decade.

China has been aggressively expanding in the South China Sea (and elsewhere) and has been implementing a system of what one might call "neo-colonialism" through soft power, particularly through their Belt and Road Initiative. We see this particularly acutely in places in Africa where the Chinese government offers poor nations loans for massive infrastructure projects that they have no hope of paying back; essentially debt traps. A good example of this might be the attempted takeover of the port of Mombasa in Kenya. In general, China is far more likely to use economic soft power to force other nations to fall in line rather than flex their military might. There is a reason they did not send the military into Hong Kong S.A.R and instead opted to essentially neuter the HK government and install puppet leaders and scary legislation like the Hong Kong Security Law.

With all of that said, here's an interesting take on exactly how the PRC might go about an invasion of Taiwan.

Well, Biden is in the pocket of the chinese. No shit Sherlock. Trump may have been loose cannon, but his opinions and views on China were right on point.
About you world war analysis...
Russia wouldn't join China in the end.
China could become this intimitading big brother for Russia. In a WW scenario Russia would probably ally with Europeans. Better trade partners and not so power hungry neighbors.

This is complete nonsense.

This whole concept that trump is better if your concern is China is extremely dubious.

You know what we need to confront China? Allies. That thing trump spent years dismantling.

It's the same as the assertion that Bidens got dementia. It's not supported by any real evidence, and in fact what evidence exists... once you stop counting out of context 5 second long clips put together by youtube loudmouths as "evidence", suggests the opposite. The right just keeps saying it hoping if they keep repeating it it'll be more believable.

Yeah I'm interested in evidence that Biden is "in the pocket of China" as many conservatives claim. People say it a lot but talk is cheap. If someone has evidence, I am legitimately interested in it.

I agree, our problems are definitely of our own making. But I also have little doubt that China and Russia are eyeing us in our doddering state and working their opportunities to ensure that they emerge ahead of us. America does the same thing, it's not that we don't deserve it, it's that I'm American and I would prefer that we don't roll over and let it happen. I am wary of China, especially, given what they're doing to a portion of their own population (the Uighers).

Waiting on the FSB to send me a hot mail order sleeper agent wife. Hail putin!
