Which is Worse—Veterinary Problems or Car Problems?

Victoria’s Secret, stocking up on lovely things!
Yesterday I took my 16 year old Maine Coon cat to the vet. My vet thinks he has kidney failure. When I went to leave the vet’s my Audi wouldn’t start. The vet thought it was my battery and gave me a jump. My car still won’t start, and I haven’t heard from the vet re: my baby’s blood work results and a prognosis. I also don’t know how much the car will cost to repair. I haven’t had a full 20mg Oxy in nearly 10 days and I’m drinking Chardonnay because I need to take this edge off.
So I always thought pet problems were worse than car problems, because they could die or have to be put down, whereas a car. Well, a car isn’t something to be attached to...

I could lose a 100 cars and still not care as much as my losing my baby girls... (Shepherd mix and Pitty mix). These two dogs are the most attached I’ve been to any dogs I’ve ever had, so it’ll be rough when the day comes. Hopefully I die before them lol.

I used to be really close with a cat named Bigfoot (polydactyl, hence the name). We called him the $30,000 kitty... and that's an underestimate on how much we spent to keep him healthy. He had a bladder infection/crystals in his urethra and his penis was surgically removed, he had teeth problems and had about 8 removed, he ate a string and had to have that surgically removed from his intenstines, then later in life he became diabetic and I had to give him insulin shots every day. I remember one day he went into a diabetic shock and went into a huge seizure. I knew what to do, I grabbed some karo syrup and rubbed it in his gums and saved his life. He would constantly follow me around and sit in my lap after that incident - like he knew I saved him.

My family loved that cat and we gave him the best life he could have. He certainly used up all 9 of his lives when he passed away in my arms at the vet at 14 years old. He had experienced so much pain in his life. I remember the vet telling me "he was ready to go", and had not seen a cat who went so quickly. He was weak and ready to let go.

Worth every penny.

A car is just a thing you can replace. An animal is a best friend and a fellow soul.

But yeah... when it rains, it pours. I understand. 16 years is a long time, you gave him a good life, that's all that matters.

OMG! The vet just called. He said Fletcher has very early kidney disease and with a bit of dietary modification he should be fine! I’m so happy! Yes, he’s a senior cat but knowing that old age will get him before his kidneys do is a great relief.
Thanks to everyone who gave me good thoughts!

Yes, pets are absolutely worth every penny! He has an ear infection and they cleaned his ears yesterday and gave him some antibiotics. I’m going to go give him a big hug and kiss, plus the good news, now!
enjoy every last minute you have with him/her

"A pet may just be a small part of your life, but to their life you are everything" or something like that - may have butchered the quote

Thanks Snafu! I’m in total agreement! I got Fletcher 2 days prior to Thanksgiving in 2005. He was scheduled to be put down, for having been at this high kill shelter in Long Beach, CA for 6 months, the next day. I showed up the Wednesday before TG and adopted him. I have loved him ever since!

Yea 16yrs is awesome you must really do well to take care of him.. I’m not a cat person, how long can they live?

I’ve got my shadow next to me right now, the little pitty doesn’t leave my side lol. Everywhere I go I got this little girl under or leaning against me. No matter how many times I accidentally step on her hah.

GC - The vet said this particular breed of cat can live to be 20! We’re hoping that’s the case!
Wizard - I feel like pets are just irreplaceable but I get that you feel the proper functioning of your car is more important. Unless your pet is a horse, a pet can’t get you to and fro.

In my town, in one of the corners of the contiguous US, people can come get their animals blessed on St. Francis Day. I’m not Catholic so I haven’t partaken in this offer, but I have friends who have taken their dogs, cats, even llamas to St. Francis annual animal blessing!

I am certainly not catholic, nor do I participate in organized religion, however I do believe St. Francis was a real person who had a unique gift.

I don't believe in the bible, but I do believe there are some parts based on reality, if that makes sense.

I first learned of St. Francis from a Tao master, actually, not from a Christian.

You can still take yours. You can get a blessing too if you want.
I'm Catholic.

Vet, for me. No hesitation.
I lost my pug Jan 7th and never could have imagined the grief. He's cremated now in a special urn and it's hard to even think about.

I have adopted 2 black cats since then; I didn't think I'd get attached since I never really liked cats.
I was soooo wrong. I had no idea how great cats are.
