What if the mainstream media covered alcohol abuse as much as other substances like opioids?

What would happen if the media started covering alcohol abuse like they cover the opioid epidemic? Would there be an alcohol epidemic? I just wonder where the line is that they set to separate the two drugs. I see drunk drivers killing people everyday just as opioids kill everyday. So why not cover alcohol use like they do with opioids? What would happen?

There’s a crack epidemics, alcohol epidemic, heroin epidemic l, pill epidemic, cocaine epidemic, etc...

The legalization ol drugs would solve so many problems and save cities a lot of money.

I disagree on legalizing all drugs. Drugs like crack, heroin, cocaine can’t be legal for obvious reasons there too highly addictive. Pills I don’t have a problem with just don’t be stupid with them. An alcohol epidemic is something we’ve been in for decades. And it’s legal.

What's wrong with you people? You want another prohibition with mafia supplying the demand for booze? You fuckers are beyond help. Enjoy your state-sponsored ban on drugs, and all the grimy side effects that brings.

Alcohol shouldn't be banned. There's smaller changes society could make to curb some of the death.

I'm all for the repeal of prohibition staying on the books. Don't get me wrong.

P.S. What's wrong with me: PTSD, panic disorder and chronic suicidal ideation.
As soon as you start with "society should", you're bound to a Orwellian nightmare that comes sooner or later. It's either complete individualism, or it is Soviet Union number two.

It's not like I don't want the Kavanaughs of the world to have a few beers. I want the wino's who are passed out on the street/in the world to realize the extent severe alcoholism can do to the body. I don't need them to quit, or to save themselves, but to realize that if they don't that it can be swiftly deadly.

You can have information campaigns, limits on advertising, reasonable daily limits per individual, etc. so that you cannot carry off in one trip enough to kill yourself with (i.e. namely what the DEA/FDA doesn't want you doing with a bunch of pharmaceuticals...)

500,000+ Americans die from tobacco/alcohol every year
1,250,000 Americans die from car accidents every year (3,287 deaths per day)
45,000 Americans committed suicide in 2016.
47,000 Americans died of opiate overdoses in 2017.

Give me a fucking break. Opiate "crisis" is not a crisis.

FFS

500,000 from obesity die each year. 60% of the country is obese and the trend is increasing. No junk food epidemic, no making mcdonalds illegal. Some drugs are simply allowed and some are not. There is no reason to it other than Jesus said don't do oxycodone.

Captain, you are absolutely correct! It's turned into the fad of the day and I am not downplaying reality. However, what is rarely reported on is that nearly 70% of those deaths are due to Fentanyl and not random opiates prescriptions. WHY?? This is plain and simple mathematics, oh but wait, let's exploit the 30% because we "can" and bury the rest of the story! Intentional homage to Paul Harvey.

Slightly incomparable as food cannot be considered an addiction, technically. But thank you for adding that statistic considering it is a compulsion/use disorder for some affected people (though not everyone with obesity has an eating disorder). I don't blame food as much as I do people not exercising in general for Americans.

I don't think it matters as the class of drug/effects are "stereotypical" enough to be lumped together. And it's all sold as "heroin" normally, except for the few people with morals and class who will call it what it is (i.e. if they suspect or know it's fentanyl they warn/inform the user it might not be/isn't real heroin, etc., what not).

The actual number of people is quite low.

OK, I do get what they're saying but my biggest point I wanted to make is that the government is targeting the 30% as demons (mostly the classic pain patients who do things the right way), mainly because it's the easy target. The biggest problem has always been and probably will be the street drugs. I personally have been a law abiding citizen and am now having my meds slashed due to all this shit and yes, you're damn right, I am pissed!
