Served alongside US Marines quite a bit in a place called the Sangin Valley, in Helmand Province which was the most violent part of the country from around 2006 until we withdrew in 2014 (I left in 2008 after my second tour). Also went to Iraq in 2004, Sierra Lionne (Africa), Macedonia (Balkans) Northern Ireland, and a host of other shit holes.
Best 8 years of my life..
No I haven't, but I've just googled it and it looks right up my street! A bunch of old fuckers getting wasted ?
Cheers for the tip! (y)
Not being argumentitive mate but in what way s is codeine an ant-cold med? It's an antitussive meaning it helps non productive cough but other than that it doesn't really treat the symptoms of the common cold in any sort of systemic way......
Im genuinely interested if you have other knowledge regarding this but in 3 years training as team medic in the Paras and a total of 5 tests basic and advanced training as civi-paramedic, I've never heard that codeine is a cold treatment beyond the aforementioned antitussive effects.
I mean, a crack smoking squirrel?
Instead of taking photos you should've took the actual bottles and cough on the way out, you could've send us more than just some pics if you would've done the right thingHaha no worries, you will bloody love it! If you've seen Doc Martin, that film is where it came from, except in the film he smokes a fuckload of weed.
"I was on a medical research trip to Amsterdam doing something medical..."
All cold medication e.g. Lemsip does not actually improve your body's response to the cold, it only alleviates the symptoms, and only mildly at that - I mean there's only so much paracetamol and phenylephrine can do (in fact phenylephrine is useless, I have no idea why they removed the pseudoephedrine it's not like the UK is crawling with meth cooks is it?)
Point is Lemsip only mildly treats symptoms of colds with the main useful ingredient being simple paracetamol, a weak analgesic. Clinical studies have shown that phenylephrine is barely more effective than placebo. So we're basically just treating colds with paracetamol.
Given this, why is it so crazy to think codeine is a superior agent to relieve cold symptoms? It won't stop the runny nose etc but then neither does phenylephrine really.
It provides superior analgesic properties to paracetamol, it helps you stop coughing, and vitally it helps you sleep which on its own will do a lot of good. And having a mild codeine high will subjectively cover up cold symptoms. Ask any opiate head on BL and they'll tell you. I had a cold recently, codeine, DHC, and oxy basically covered 85% of it up.
The only reason this is not taught in medical training is because they don't want to encourage off-label uses for opioids. But remember not too long ago opium, morphine, and even heroin were sold in OTC cough, cold, and flu remedies at any pharmacy. Because they bloody well work! Not to mention the heroin and cocaine cough drops. I got real photos of it all from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in London if you're curious.
I might as well turn the question around and ask how does Lemsip treat a cold when the only truly active ingredient is paracetamol? A bit of paracetamol will make a headache slightly better but I'd rather have some Paramol and codeine linctus.
