Wonderful, trump damaged separation of powers in a way that could have consequences for decades to come because he's an impatient man child.

As for the legal question. I hope you're right. But I fear it's far more complicated than that.

One major problem that might crop up, is that congress already has the power to cancel this state of emergency. It's just that they might not have a majority for that.

In the absence of other legal problems, the courts could well argue that the national emergencies act already provides a remedy for this problem. And thus it is for congress to invalidate the emergency not them.

Other Presidents have pushed that boundary further each time. To expect Trump not to shove it way out of joint shouldn't come as a surprise.

As to the majority in Congress...if Reps are cognizant of the precedent (questionable), and aware of the future impact, I think enough would vote it down with the Dems rather than ride Trump's wake on this one. But even that vote is a precedent that the Dems then need to be wary of when they regain the white house. I do not believe ALL the Reps are lock step with Trump's ideas and direction. It's hard to be when his march is from

I've always said that it's a presidential tradition that every president has to find their own unique way to piss on the constitution. So no, this isn't unique to trump in that sense.

What probably is unique is just how stupidly he's done it.

I agree though that Republicans would be smart to try and stop this. It's too dangerous to them in the long term. What happens when a Democrat president tries to use the same trick for positions Republicans hate.

Perhaps the next emergency will be gun violence, or climate change, or abortion. Trump doesn't care because as I've always said, trumps a republican in name only. In reality he's loyal only to himself. So he won't care whatsoever if his actions today fuck over the Republicans in the future.

Like it or not, that's a negotiation tactic. His support among HISPANICS rose sharply during the government shutdown - so he obviously knows what he's doing. Y'all forget that Trump campaigned on the wall and he won. The polls were wrong. The people voted and they want a fucking wall. Accept it. The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 50% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump?s job performance. Forty-nine percent (49% ) disapprove.

The latest figures include 37% who Strongly Approve of the job Trump is doing and 41% who Strongly Disapprove. This gives him a Presidential Approval Index rating of -4. (see trends).

The other day they indicated Trump at 50% for his 24mo mark, compared to 48% for Obama at the same 2yr mark. So, while 50% for Trump as a high water mark being much lower than the ones alasdair pointed to...I'm willing to be ALL of those high water marks are not at the 24mo point in their Presidencies. Hence, why I asked for links, to know how you're comparing a President with 2y on the job to guys who mostly had 8y on the job.

The founding fathers did not want a tyranny of the majority. Good public support is something, but it's not everything.

Oh and just as a quick side note, I think George w bushes 90% popularity should be thrown out for these sorts of comparisons. That was right after 9/11, and extraordinary event that makes fair comparison very difficult. I hate trump but even I don't think it's fair to make that particular comparison.

I saw an article about how Trump could get elected by his base alone (you had mentioned it, I think), but it really depends on the other nominee. Any early preferences?

I want all elections to be completely transparent, I don't care if everyone can see who voted for who, unfortunately it's the only way to prove electoral integrity. I personally think Trump won the popular vote, due to systemic fraud in CA and other places but atm it's speculation (however, contrary to leftist talking points there have been multiple counts of electoral/voter fraud found in multiple states). I'm suspicious on the recent French election (Macron enjoyed reaching <20%), and I have a sneaking suspicion as to why they want to hold a second Brexit referendum.

Good work on the poll comparison. I would agree with citing Rasmussen, they were the most accurate during the '16 election.
Nate Silver is terrible he had Clinton @ 75% on election night.

I feel that the point here is that the media paints Trump as having very little to no support. If his poll numbers are comparable to Obama's then that really isn't true, or nobody liked Obama.

The elections here in Europe have been heavily manipulated for decades. Merkel was never actually elected, either initially or after, as shown by thorough research into the fraud that occurred. Sweden's election system is ridiculously easy to tamper with, & their recent election was a joke. And I agree about Brexit. There was never any intention of letting it happen, it was purely to cause strife & division, & so those in the know could profit off the pound dropping in value.
