2017 Trump Presidency Thread

The damage to the economy occured over decades, and it wasn't just abuse by previous administrations (but some did a lot of damage fast) that caused it but global changes. Even if Trump can bring back some manufacting and slow the hemorrhaging of STEM jobs, it will take decades to recover. I believe he intends to try, but I think things will only get worse.

So you believe that unskilled workers should make 7.25/hr; now, please explain to me why if unskilled workers should be treated this way, how bringing back manufacturing jobs will save the country. Any Joe Shmoe can stand on a factory line and do his mundane task in the auto factory all day and not have to have a lick of skill to do it, so should we now pay these renewed-trump-promise workers 7.25/hr as well?

Dropper is right about the fast food jobs paying minimum wage. Minimum wage was ideally for highschool students to earn some spending money, and taht is how it was during the 1950s and 1960s when the economy was strong. Unfortunately, jobless adults with a college education must now turn to those jobs in some cases. So, yes, the pay needs to be improved to reflect that, or better paying jobs need to be created.

again, trump knew the context in which he made his bold predictions on jobs and he set the bar high for himself. he's not going to be able to point fingers and use excuses like this if he fails to deliver.

Those factory jobs pay a living wage bc there are barriers to entry in the form of unique knowledge of their systems. It takes a lot of training to work in some of these factories, especially the automobile industry.

Socko is correct in the fact that we need to create other higher wage jobs. These fast food jobs probably won't even exist in 10 years as they are being taken over by automation.

I agree; I'm just trying to point out some of the holes in your logic. Yeah fast food jobs aren't worth squat, but if I'm being honest I don't see teenagers in the back when I eat fast food, I see people older than me and it really disturbs me that they've been relegated to that.

Also, you cannot say that the three months of on the job training for a manufacturing job or whatnot, is worth triple the pay that other low wage jobs earn; it is still a very unskilled job and anyone can be taught how to do it.

I'm not an advocate for raising the minimum wage like Ryan so hastily assumed; however, I am an advocate for the creation of jobs that can feed families and the raising of taxes on wealthy corporations and individuals who do everything in their power to treat human beings like inanimate objects to be used then thrown away.

Robots took a lot of those jobs. They aren't coming back either.

US auto production under Obama went up by over a million vehicles. But the jobs didn't come back.

droppers, you're perhaps trump's main apologist here. do you think this displays hypocrisy?

do you think this (tweet) is fair criticism: "can you believe that, with all of the problems and difficulties facing the u.s., the president spent the day playing golf."?

So... how is it going in America? Its on the news here that the immigration bans have been lifted. Trumps appeal is lost.

Hows the domestic side of things going? You know, the non headline grabbing stuff like employment, cost of living, education, important stuff that wont teally give Trump worldwide attention but needs doing. Hows that going? Living up to expectations?

My favorite spin on all the migrants going home is that obama is so tough on immigration and that these are due to his deportation efforts!

Yep clean coal is big in western Kentucky, but it is much more expensive to produce. I agree it was phased out far too hastily. To the point where you wonder if effecting the economy negatively was their intent.
Clean coal hey. Australian scientists have debunked that whole notion and we are a major user and exporter of coal. Where i live is coal mine central and the industry is hugely subsidised. If there was a price on carbon emissions then renewables are going to be more cost effective within five years. China is heavily investing in renewables. I guess they are sick of the smog and can see the future clearer than government's like ours here in Australia and yours that are bought and paid for by fossil fuel interests.

we're less than a month into this presidency and it's looking pretty shambolic already. what is 4 years of this going to look like?

he campaigned heavily on draining the swamp and he's done the exact opposite. his core supporters don't seem to care that he lies all the time and lies about that but many people who voted for him are now asking whether that decision was a good decision.

his travel ban took another hit today: Trump travel ban hit by new legal setback

what he's doing is one thing, but the way he's doing these things and his aggressive, childish response when things don't go his way is a whole other. we all knew he wasn't very presidential but he's taking it to new levels every day.

he looked primed for action with a republican house and senate but they're mildly freaking out too: As Trump stumbles, Hill Republicans find it harder to defend him

he's going to find it harder and harder to get anything done unless he finds a way to ratchet back the toddler-like behavior and focus himself and his staff.

and finally, and perhaps most importantly, he also campaigned on security and that concept is in absolute tatters as people are questioning his ties - and those of some of his swamp-dwelling cabinet members - to russia. his national security advisor has had to resign in disgrace over lies about inappropriate communication with russia and the whole issue of security seems to have become a surreal joke. "Other surprise developments have also unnerved Republicans, including Trump’s decision to effectively turn his Mar-a-Lago Club terrace into an open-air situation room." (source)

it's a huge mess and it's hard to see it getting any better.

What? Trump is a workaholic. Also the times he has golfed he has been working, essentially. In business, the golf course is often used as a place to work out deals. My boss uses the golf course all the time. He doesn't take a salary and is saving the government money in many many ways. The media never gave us updates on how much the secret service costs for eight years, and now they do all the time! Nobody believes these biased media outlets.

I am praying the dnc picks this Ellison guy to lead them. The more they play identity politics the better it is for conservatives in 18 and 20 imo.

interesting. aside from the round with the president of japan, the white house has declined to say who accompanied him.

help us understand how you have insider information on his golf partners - and what they talked about - on the other occasions?
