Trump says Philippines fighting drugs 'the right way': Duterte

Manila (AFP) - Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte said Saturday that President-elect Donald Trump told him Manila was conducting its deadly drug war "the right way", in stark contrast to the criticism he has received from the current White House.

The Philippine president called Trump late Friday evening to congratulate him on his election victory with Trump wishing him "success" in his controversial anti-crime crackdown, in which some 4,800 people have been killed since June, according to Duterte.

"He was quite sensitive also to our worry about drugs. And he wishes me well... in my campaign and he said that... we are doing it as a sovereign nation, the right way," Duterte said in a video released by his office Saturday.

"He was wishing me success in my campaign against the drug problem."

Duterte, 71, launched an unprecedented war on drugs that drew a wave of global criticism with Obama urging the leader in September to conduct his campaign "the right way" following concerns over alleged extrajudicial killings.

Trump's office released a brief statement following the conversation, saying Duterte had congratulated Trump and the two agreed to work together closely.

Duterte won presidential elections in May after pledging to kill tens of thousands of drug suspects, warning that otherwise the Philippines would turn into a narco-state.

Since assuming office, he has called on police and even civilians to kill drug users.

Duterte also said he would be "happy to slaughter" three million drug addicts, and likened his campaign to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's efforts to exterminate Jews in Europe.

In October Duterte announced a "separation" from the United States and had called for the withdrawal of American troops from his country, putting into question Manila's 70-year-old alliance with Washington.

But on Saturday, Duterte said he "could sense a good rapport" with an "animated" Trump.

Duterte's spokesman said the "understanding" between the two leaders signalled better Philippine-US ties.

"We can say at this stage that our relationship with the US is improving," Ernesto Abella said.

Video released by Duterte's office showed the Philippine leader laughing as he chatted on the phone, later saying Trump would would be "a good president for the United States of America".

Duterte said the president-elect invited him to visit New York and Washington DC and he returned the favour by asking Trump to attend a regional summit that the Philippines is set to host next year.

"If I'm around, he wants to be notified of my presence," Duterte said.

Oh my fucking god.

I though I couldn't hate Trump anymore and I can't believe this.

He wants to "work together with Duerte"??!!!

Fuck I'm getting worried now about what will happen with our drug laws.

I mean do people think that they are actually going to get much stricter under Trump??

I REALLY hope not.

Fuck, I am actually SEETHING with anger right now.

That Trump actually fucking believes it's a GOOD thing that Duerte is killing people for drug use??!!!!!

I seriously, I just can't express how angry this makes me.

I have to stop thinking about this.

I REALLY hope that our drug laws don't get stricter under Trump.

I mean does the president have 100% control over changing or influencing drug laws, or he does he need the help of the congress, senate, house or supreme court to do this??

And even if he needs their help, he can appoint whoever he wants right??

Seriously, this kind of shit makes me want to leave America too, even though I won't.

Canada IMO is VASTLY superior in so many fucking ways to the U.S., ESPECIALLY their drug laws.

I'm not sure I believe this whole thing too much when it's come out of this slimy devils mouth. Politicians lie all the time for their own agendas.

The president has no legal authority to write up or vote on legislation, the presidents only authority is to veto bills and even that can be overridden by congress, and no, the president does not appoint congressmen, and the people he does appoint require the consent of congress. That's how separation of powers works in the united states.

I agree though, for an American president to say that this is a good thing is unconscionable. This behavior totally invalidates and spits on any concept of the rule of law. The cops are extra judicially summarily executing people. That is the antithesis of the rule of law and the president has an oath to uphold the law of the united states. Fuck trump, saying what he said here is abhorrent and unthinkable.

^I feel like the arguments of did say or didn't say is kind of irrelevant considering Trump will never give enough of a shit about a backwater like the Phillipines to bother rocking the boat with them. I think you would expect his foreign policy to be more on the side of collecting resources effectively from a place like the Phillipines than dealing with the inhabitants.

But I'm sure his polices of empowering big business and the aristocracy and persecuting the working classes are going to continue to fall under the guise of the War on Drugs. The War on Drugs is just a war on the poor, as just about everyone uses drugs. It's just that the richer you are, the more likely you're going to be able to avoid the police in the process of using your drugs.

It's harder for the cops to crash directly into your living room when you have a gate at the end of your driveway. It's pretty hard for them to catch you copping when you have a chauffeur who does it for you and of course it's easier to either influence the cops to let you off initially, if not that, the judge and if not that, a great lawyer to get you an apology and community service.

Maybe I'm wrong could Trump be the one playing Duterte here?

" my campaign and he said that... we are doing it as a sovereign nation, the right way"

To me this looks like Trump could have been stating his approval of Duterte's soveriegn/independent solution rather than picking a solution from international pressure. If that's the case he may have been doing his "say something ambiguous and let others fill the blanks" routine, then Duterte (knowingly or not) interprets this as his actual solution being approved.

Maybe it's too late and I'm thinking into this too much...

Amen! The criminalization of being poor is a very sad reality that creates an endless cycle of incarceration. CCA loves it though.

I really think that Trump will be the type to silence opposition and suppress demonstration against himself. If there was ever a time to consider a revolt I think it's now.

Sorry. I just saw your "war on the poor" and wanted to shout from the rooftops 'tr00 dat!'
