Is opium really that harmful?

Maybe it would be best to here it from some long-term user here. Excluding constipation and sexual issues, the physical damage seems to be non-existent. There aren't any real negative mental health effects to the drug either. Withdrawal can be grueling, it's highly addictive, and fairly expensive, but compared to other drugs this doesn't actually seem to be that bad, .

I know in the long-term it can make depression and anxiety worse, but in the short-term it might actually help with these things. Is it really that bad?

Short term side effects aren't what make opiates dangerous. People think they can control their use, but the addiction controls your life before you know it.

Unfortunately opiates produce what might be the best feeling you'll ever have (of course different people have their DOC), and even if youre not physically addicted, it's easy to be psychologically addicted and start fawning over the next time you get to use. Of course some are more prone to addiction than others, but it's always dangerous territory.

Occasional use isn't really harmful. Infact I don't think there is any toxicity attributed to opiates/oids. I could be wrong though so don't quote me on this.

When used sparingly though, opioids/ates are one of the most benign drug classes there is. The danger is addiction, which can happen to anyone, and it only takes a single use to set things in motion. Even if you can keep it under control for months, or heck a year after trying it for the first time..

It's still a dangerous drug class to use recreationally. Controlled use can very rapidly end up controlling you. All it takes is one serious setback, or if you're prone to opiate addiction all it might take is an excuse to tell yourself and/or others so you can justify using it more often than initially planned. After even a short while (5 days - a week) of daily (ab)use, withdrawal symptoms can begin to manifest. And once you reach that point, often certain responsibilities require you to be 'well', or you just don't want to deal with any kind of withdrawals (eventhough at this point they'd be mild and postponing them would make them worse) - so that's when redosing isn't just to feel good anymore, it's also to 'not feel bad'.

As soon as you're taking them to stave off withdrawals instead of using them for their recreational effect only, you'll find yourself on a slippery slope. If you realize it's turning into a problem on time there is still time to quit with minimal discomfort, just some sweatiness and slightly heightened anxiety are the only w/d symptoms you should experience if you realize you'd better stop on time.

So, in short;
Short term: No, they don't cause much (if any?) physical harm, there is however the risk of addiction, even after using it only a few times (or sometimes even just once).
Long term: Yes, you will need to take opiates to be 'well' enough to get out of bed. You will feel depressed, lethargic and have 0 energy whenever you run out of opiates.

Note: Opium is a mix of many alkaloids (morphine,codeine,thebaine, ...) , and therefore makes you experience the withdrawal symptoms of multiple opiates at once. Therefore it's supposed to have a pretty bad w/d to go through. Also the duration of opium makes the w/d last quite long too, which sounds pretty sucky given the severity of opium's withdrawal.

Well never really used the real opium, but I think poppy pod tea is almost the same, you just don't chase the dragon with it you only drink it. I used it 3 years daily, actually normally I have very regular need to go to Wc, like 3-4 times a day, but iwth poppy tea I had to go onlt once a day or every other day, so it was perfect for that. Also I my sexual needs went very low, which si very good for people who have very strong libido and porn or sex addicted. I started to get migraine every now and then that lastet 2 days, I had to lay in dark room and I constantly puked, it was very hard to get my ppT to get drinken, because I puked very easily, I tried to keep it inside my at least 20min bbefore I puked, that way at least didnt have to go thouigh WD while having very strong migraine, I've never gor migraien before in my life mostly just minor headache very rarely. I used lots of poppy sed tea too, so not sure if there were some chemical on seeds that caused that, never can know. I was able to work all the time I never had any problems only when I run out of my stash, I never used any otehr drug while on it no alcohol, nicotine or speed, nothing else, it took every other need to use anything away. Also I lost all my angriness, rage, self loathing, anxiety and depression. But in the end the quality of my seeds and pods went so low that I had to pay for them very high price and I didnt want to end up iin situation where I cant get them like ending in jail for some reason. I decided to quit just for the wear of getting in WD in very bad situation. If I was to live in china in 40's I most likely would smoke it every day rest of my life. But currently its very hard to be opiate addict. If you decide to start using opium or other opiates daily then you really need to think what you want youre life to be after 4 years, you want to look the positive and negative sides, lets say that you have very bad cancer and youdie in 2 years then I would start to use strong opiates every day no problem.

If you can moderate your use, then no opium isn't that bad at all. I've had it once and it didn't leave me with any cravings to do it again - however this is having already kicked a serious opiate habit in the past.

Just think of it as essentially being codeine + morphine, if you can moderate your use of either of those drugs then you're ok. The addiction potential is very real though and don't let yourself get complacent.

Well back in 1930, about 20% population of Chinese were addicted to opium.
