Stay on the streets of this town
and they'll be carving you up alright
They say you gotta stay hungry
hey baby I'm just about starving tonight
I'm dying for some action
I'm sick of sitting 'round here trying to write this book
I need a love reaction
come on now baby gimme just one look...
Bruce Springsteen is very underrated as a lyricist imo, he's more of a story teller than a poet perhaps, but he tells those stories in a very powerful way. Born In The USA and Darkness OTEOT are 2 of my all time favorite albums to this day. The music and lyrics are just soooooooo good, and he's inspiring the new generation of bands like The Gaslight Anthem, who use loads of his metaphors and references in their tracks, as a mark of respect, rather than 'stealing his ideas'. If you like The Boss check out The Gaslight Anthem's '59 Sound album, it's one of the best albums of the last ten years by a mile imo.
The Boss joined TGA on stage (I think it was at Glastonbury) a few years ago, that must have been a great moment for TGA as they make no secret of the high esteem in which they hold Spingsteen. They dont even have to say that in an interview. I'ts obvious just from their lyrics, which I've been spamming the Favorite Lyrics thread with for several weeks now, as their lyrics are every bit as good as Springsteen's, in some ways some of them are arguably even better, but it's all a matter of subjective taste, yes many lines are very similar / familiar sounding, but that is totally deliberate thing on their part imo. They wouldn't sing about a girl called "Bobby Jean" for no reason would they.
