EADD Film Recommendations v5 - TBC

I love 2001 but it is very sterile.

Hated it as a kid so I didn't watch it until I got the BD in a Kubrick Collection box set a few years back. The transfer is so immaculate it's one of the discs I use to show of the home cinema systems picture quality. Not bad for a 49 year old example of photography.

It's an amazing film and experience, but like the best albums it can be an acquired taste.

I could definitely appreciate that it was a product of its time and some of the cinematography was a bit advanced for it time.

I only watched it as a list ticking operation as I really like Kubrick but had never seen it.

Its quite a good story - it's basically the same as Nolans's 'Interstellar' only without the human relationships, the expositionary verbal interaction between the characters and none of -270.45 degree centigrade space cold Kubrickian presentation.

recently seen Patch Adams, with Robin Williams, on tv. Hm. weird how you see such movies differently after the main actor is gone... and even more so when the story is somewhat reminiscent of his own troubles

So kinda similar only much better than Interstellar then, yes? ;)

I wasn't the biggest fan of Interstellar, but it was better than The Martian. I suppose both involved rescuing Matt Damon from another planet :\

What pissed me off was Matthew McConaughey talking like he had sneaked a girl into his bedroom the whole film. He sure likes a good whisper.

Ha! Many things irritated me about Interstellar but oddly enough not the whispering. I promised Felix I'd give it another go cos apparently it is actually amazing and I just overlooked this fact entirely. This is entirely possible so I'll reserve second judgement. Initial impressions were not good at all though :!

Got The Martian around somewhere ready to watch but must admit I was suspecting it to be dire. Again. may be wrong though. I've actually got shedloads of films lined up to watch - many of which I'm really looking forward to, some more just mild-moderate curiosity about - so Matt Damon flicks are probably going to remain pretty low priority for a while.

Interstellar gets a pass for its scientific accuracy because a lot of it is very theoretical. The science in The Martian is well within the realms of what we already understand very well ie. Newtonian physics and the basic physical properties of Mars, yet they fuck it up in the first act.

Yes, I know it's a movie and we can't expect it to be as infallible as the films they used to show in school when they rolled the TV into the classroom ;)

I've heard mixed opinions of scientific accuracy in Interstellar. Seems to divide the usual suspect TV scientists down the middle. Kip Thorne is great though and I certainly wouldn't argue the toss with him :D

I have yet to see a movie made outside of Hollywood that wasn't terrible. I tried to watch this English ganster movie about like two brothers and one was gay and the other was straight. They had a temultuous relationship. The story was boring and the plot was filled with holes. The gay brother and many other factors made the movie feel like it had a sort of forced agenda. It was bad enough I couldn't take more than half of it before turning it off. I'll have look up on fmovief what it was called. Long story short movies made out side of the U.S. Are too hit or miss for me to even chance. Tried this other one that was a terrible war movie about Canada's role in Iraq. City of God might be the only movie I can think of off hand but I think even that was a Hollywood production??

It sounds like it was about the Cray twins.

I don't mean to sound like a snob (but its inevitable because what I am about to say sounds snobbish and I evidently mean to say it) but Hollywood produces the biggest amount of propagandised bullshit. You must have terrible taste or haven't ventured far into the beautiful world of more independent films.

That was it luigi, man what a terrible movie!
Oh you are for sure correct and not being snobbish at all. that artsy fartsy stuff never really did it for me other than like a requiem for a dream, blue velvet, and a few others.

Aye well we didn't have Cosa Nostra to make crime films about so the Cray twins are about as hardcore as it gets when it comes to crime drama :\

Think of it as our Godfather III, despite us having nothing like Godfather.

Ya the subject matter and even the acting wasn't the issue it was the writing and the direction. Was one of the cray twins Even gay? That bit felt forced to appease PC culture. The plot seemed to not connect at all and was all over the place to the point that it was silly and boring. Sorry, I got mad bc fmovief had it at like 4 Stars and I invested like 1.5 hours. Also it was way way too long.

Hahaha sorry Shambles but here is my Edward the Confessor moment - I love them both AND the 'The Martian' even for all the holes in the 'Interstellar' story, especially with regards to the more speculative theoretical physics which have taken on a lot more weight in respect of the recent LIGO detection.

'2001- ASO' is the 'art house' version of the commercialised efforts of 'Interstellar' and I love them both.

You see what you want to see - it's well known that one of the Krays was gay (though not in a very "PC" way i suppose).

Non-hollywood film? Try 'my beautiful launderette' (are you man enough to reach the end of that one? ;))

way to try to manufacture a sjw issue when there's no issue, droppers. it's pretty well known - in the uk certainly - that ronnie kray was not straight. he actually described himself as bisexual but his taste for men was no secret.

so nice try but no cigar. i guess when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail...

i've not seen the new 'legend' yet but will check it out. there's another biopic called, simply, the krays starring the kemp brothers (of spandau ballet) as ronnie and reggie. it's a great film and stars some venerable british acting talent like billie whitelaw, tom bell, steven berkoff, et. al.

Dead Man's Shoes - gave the heads up to a mate on it a while back, and now he won't stop going on about it. 8) Super stuff.

Finally got round to watching Apocalypse Now the extended version. A marathon but totally worth it. Wild Tales an Argentinian flick about various obscure scenarios was also brilliant along with the Cate Blanchett one, Carol.

Straight Outta Compton - An enjoyable romp and educational with regards the influence Eazy E had on the group.
