They say this was the way the future was meant to feel,
X thousand pillheads vouging in a field....

Well its the future now and its crap compared to the 90's so you just have to grab it where you can.

I feel the same way.
Social media has its uses, but it is a huge distraction, social pacifer and i think it has done great damage to the creativity and community spirit that was previously inspired by boredom and the need to create community.

While BL is a website that could fall under the broad definition of "social media", i think it reflects people's lives and cultural participation more than FB or whatever.

If anything, BL inspires me to get out there and live my life, chase my dreams and experience the world - rather than feel sorry for myself because someone's carefully instagram/fb persona paints a pretty picture of their perfect - contrived, online - representations of their lives.
Communities, subcultures and the 'counter-culture' generally have become more abstract, less tactile, more superficial - and less grassroots and locally unique. The global cultural homogenisation of the modern world and information technology has many good points - but it has broken down the innovative and healthily competitive nature of local (for example) music scenes, and the real-world communities that spring up around them.
Not saying all internet community stuff is bad (that would be ironic/hypocritical of me, wouldn't it? Posting in eadd from western fucking australia!) - but it's changed the game, and the nature of community and culture; especially drug culture - lots of people's drug connect is even local or in the same country.

Dark net markets have changed drug culture, which in turn has altered the nature of online drug discussion boards.
With far less frequency, do i see people talk about the good gear they are getting in [insert general town or locality]. It has been replaced by subtle (preferably, goddammit!) references to scoring on DNMs.
Things have changed an awful lot in the drug world in the last 5 years; let alone the last 25-30 years (in reference the the rave scene).

The sanitised nature of pop culture generally is a whole other rant (dont get me started!) - but it has a lot to do with the decreased revenue of film, music, all kinds of media.
Everyone expects to be entertained for free these days - so the people who create much of this content - often can't make a buck from it...so, rarher than take risks, they play it safe.
Re-making/franchising old films is one example; journalistic standards have slipped so far into "clickbait" and so on....the money has dried up, so the risk-taking has too. Sanitation :(

On the matter of free content, I'm currently trying to build a Neuropharm. Basics sorta thingymybob on FB of all places, and doing so for free - social media responds to the input of users and so providing educational content is an alternative to consuming entertaining content. :)

One thing I've noticed after my 3 years away is that these forums don't feel as busy these days.
The banter used to be fast and furious.

Fuckin hell mate, you sound like a reet owd git - even worse than me... :)

I've seen lots of these sort of posts - " it were better back int'day", "I remember when eadd were all fields", etc. So I think "bloody hell, this must be a right old timer talking". But when I check the join date, most of them have been around less time than I have (and you're a case in point sunny Jim!). The thing is, I don't believe that EADD has really changed that much since 2010. OK, it ebbs and flows, people come and people go, some even die. But this place is what YOU make it. If you think it's shit, make it unshit. Put some banter out there, and you will be rewarded with banter back (possibly semen stained and full of pondlife)...

Where social media has changed things has been the way people are able to censor their own exposure to outside ideas. If you rely solely on a medium such as Facebook for public opinion you need to remember that its content is actually limited by your own selective group of friends. If I was to judge the current Australian election solely on my Facebook feed I would think it was looking a close race. Jump on a betting site and you will realise labor is a $3 outsider

Social networks like bluelight however is by its nature a cross section of different members of society, admittedly even one that is skewed towards more liberally minded individuals. You should be able to get healthy debate and contrasting issues. Unfortunately we have a more and more authoritarian run community now where differing ideas are not encouraged but instead censored.

Your exposure to pop culture is manipulated the same way. Facebook in particular is programmed to feed on your likes and favourites, so of course you are going to see a more homogenised version of your current life. It's like always going to the same club and hearing the same type of music. Cutting edge art and music exists, you just need to broaden your exposure.

Wow so i thought I'd Have a vodka as I've not drank alcohol in aaages bar the odd sip of asti n wow has my tolerence to alcohol gone down. Ive only had one glass n I really feel tipsepy like WTF?!<3

Differing ideas are most welcome. Calling folk 'faggots' and 'niggers' is not. Other than that the only real restriction is on personal abuse which has always been prohibited under the BLUA. I just don't see these as such terribly onerous restrictions on free speech - and nor do the vast majority of BL members.

That aside, I tend to agree on the social media stuff. One of many reasons it doesn't interest me. I don't need any help in limiting my access to ideas I rarely bump into - can manage that quite well enough myself and at least I will come across new and intriguing things purely by accident pottering t'interwebz without using social media platforms to filter my web access. To be honest I think we're in a bit of a golden age when it comes to all manner of media, art and information - it's all out there. Biggest problem is ever having the time to take enough in precisely because there is so much on offer.
