You may have heard in medical literature that garlic is nature's antibiotic but I'm not sure if any of my fellow bluelighters are aware of how to get the health benefits from garlic.

If you use it properly especially during a flu or illness, even for general health & stronger immune system the key is to consume garlic as you would with an antibiotic! That is to say, one should eat 2 cloves from a bulb/head, every 6-8hrs! If eating 2 cloves every 8hrs doesn't seem to do it, then try eating 2 cloves every 6hrs.

To be safe and to avoid the risk of stomach irritation it is recommended one eat the garlic with something small like a few crackers or a biscuit. After about 7-10 days there should be an improvement in your health compared to the boost of strength the immune system receives from a treatment of amoxicillin.

There are absolutely no side effects but if you are prone to stomach problems or have an ulcer you must make sure to eat something along with the garlic cloves. I hope I did my good deed for the day.

I heard that if you have a UTI or yeast infection, stick a clove of garlic up your hooha overnight and it'll be cured! Lmao. Anyone tried it?

I remember reading a "herbal medicine" book with decent credibility and scientific explanations. Onions and garlic were recommended for yeast infections but I don't think it said sticking it up was a way to take it.

hello , i've used just garlic & zinc the past few years since over the counter meds strongly disagree with me , last time i tried taking nyquill it gave me a seizure . im seizure prone and i have to avoid some things .
Garlic has another good use for earaches ! , to treat an earache slice a small piece of garlic kinda thin too take the peeling off first then toast it some on stove on a cast iron skillet used to heat pancakes or tortillas preferably , then you take the toasted piece of garlic put it in a cotton ball and put the cotton ball in your ear canal .

Garlic, besides being tasty, is reported to have antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and positive cardiovascular effects. If you have a cold, or a minor sinus infection or even low grade influenza (assuming you are a relatively young, healthy individual) eat all you want.

But I must point out a few things. I dont want people to forgo antibacterials if they have things like pneumonia or have other health conditions that already compromise their immune system. If you consider yourself to have severe symptoms while ill, go get checked. Self-diagnosis is almost never correct, so anything out of the ordinary of a run of the mill cold, it is always prudent to see a doctor.

Second, while the health benefits are generally positive for garlic, much of the data shows modest or short term benefit or do not necessarily show decreases in things like morbidity and mortality or increases in QOL, rather decreases in physiologic outcomes (such as decreased BP) which do not need to correlate to better patient outcomes. This also holds true for adverse events though fortunately, especially the link between garlic and bleeding. Evidence for not just GI upset, but actual damage to the mucosa is a bit more compelling. I would probably advise people with a history of ulcers or taking blood thinners to limit their raw garlic intake and to stop garlic 5 days before surgery just to be safe.

The formulation of garlic also can make a difference. For instance, fresh garlic may be a better antifungal than freeze dried extracts but aged garlic extract may be better for hypertension than raw garlic. And cooking garlic with high heat negates pretty much all the effects.

And, I admit this is nitpicky, but amoxicillin doesnt boost your immune system. It kills bacteria and the immune system cleans them out. In fact, it is possible antibiotics lower immunity through disruption of GI flora.

I am not trying to rain on garlic's parade. For colds or other minor viral infections or as a daily supplement for the CV benefits, I think it is perfectly fine to try. But I just want everyone to know that variables like formulation, severety of disease, and current health conditions and medications combined with good but not great data on its benefits should make one ask themself if garlic is the way to go.

I have heard that raw garlic is best when oxidized. So I put a clove or two in a garlic press an then let it sit for a couple minutes. Not sure of the science behind it but I believe it's true.

You're gonna have to show us where you heard that, cuz I don't know why that'd be true.

It does work well, though I eat a lot of it anyway. If I feel like my immune system needs a boost, I'll juice it and drink it as a quick shot, though I have a cold press masticating juicer. I throw the pulp in the shot so nothing goes to waste. It's important to note that you want the crushed garlic to be exposed to oxygen for approximately 5 minutes before consumption to maximize the allium.
