Well I certainly hope so. Though that makes me wonder, given all the segways and those crappy hoverboard things that have come out recently, why don't we a have any 2-stroke unicycles yet? I just want to hurtle down the M1 even less safely than on a motorbike, is that too much to ask?

How do they get away with calling those things hoverboards? They have fucking wheels. I want a real hoverboard one without wheels.

They probably paid off whoever owns the rights to Back to the Future, the bastards. I don't know if tech is at the point where you can make a floaty thing that's skateboard sized, but there was a motorbike with the front and back wheels replaced with fans (the fan axes were perpendicular to the ground so it flew of course), which was pretty mint. Notably, they had to turn off the automatic stabilising systems for cornering because it was more effective to just let the rider lean like on a normal motorbike.

Big problem is the power to weight ratios would have to be obscene to get enough lift. Back-of-the-envelope calculations say a pair of 30 cm fans would need 140 mph airflow to get enough lift to equal the weight of a 75 kg rider. I'm a bit too tired to calculate what sort of power that would take, but I can say for certain it'd be a lot. So you're either looking at giant fans that defeat the purpose of the form factor, obscene power outputs (with attendant problems with heat and just getting a motor that could actually handle that) or you need some other source of lift, which is going to be hard if you want to run outside of purpose-built environments.

I just realised I have lecture notes for basically the exact problem I was trying to analyse and I tried to derive the equations myself instead of just going and checking it. I'm gonna go hunt down the book on the relevant section and make sure I didn't make any really stupid mistakes, given that I was basically just relying on matching up units to come up with working maths...

I have now gone over my numbers, score one for equating units! I think I was going to cook some dinner (at half 6 in the morning, naturally) but doing maths is entirely too distracting. To summarise because I don't want to go through and try and do subscript for all the symbols, to support a 75 kg person on a massless hoverboard, if you have 2 30 cm fans, you would need an air velocity of 64 m/s, which is about 140 mph. This represents a power of about 24 kW, or 32 bhp. I'm not sure what the efficiencies for either a petrol or electric motor-driven fan are, but at a guess you're looking somewhere on the low end of motorbike engines, and obviously that invalidates our assumption of a massless board.

It's a shame, a go-anywhere hoverboard would be fun, but fluid dynamics says no. At least for a fan driven set-up, anyway.

The worst bit was I had to wikipedia the definitions because I couldn't remember them off hand. The occasionally lying textbook doesn't lie though.

That just makes me want to work out how many trucks a coal fired power station (Draxx is the one that comes to mind because they gave us a tour) could launch per hour. Or alternatively how many miles of trucks in a traffic jam (a 60 mph traffic jam of course) it would take to power the UK for a day.

Are you still on the diabetes going or was that ome day? I really admire you nurses for the work you do. Do you find it rewarding? What do you het from what you do?

No the diabetes traing was just for one day. Been back on the ward the last two. It is rewarding work and i really love what i do (well most days anyway) but its not particularly well paid considering it requires a university degree and the responsibility that comes with it. I get about $75 K base rate plus shift loading. Its plenty for me though. I get to buy my wine and go overseas once a year so i cant complain. No one gets into nursing for the money thats for sure though.

Yeah, my spare is a bigger tire and really can't be arsed wrestling with it in mornings. Tire shop costs a dollar to plug and air up:)

When I was in hospital last July the nurses were almost doing double shifts for others who didn't turn up. They were so busy yet remained calm n helpful. Gotta admire that.
