The Big and Senseless Mass Shooting Thread

The Big and Senseless Mass Shooting thread

Seeing that this is now a weekly occurrence, lets not clutter the forum with massacre/spree/mass shooting threads. Please place them here instead. Thank you.

I feel as though you are marginalizing/trivializing these events with this thread title though. Also do you think this thread could get trigger warnings? Has that ever been a discussion in the mod forums?

While I've elected not to further participate in the discussion of guns or similar subjects of such passion. Id like to say I agree with calling it senseless. Not just that the shootings themselves are senseless, but we all know and always did that even in the impossibly unlikely event threads like these ever reach consensus, it's still senseless in that it won't change a thing in reality.

I agree with the trigger warning too, couldn't hurt. I don't know anyone who's been a direct victim of a mass shooting, but I have a friend who lost a friend of his in one of the notable mass shootings, and another who wasn't a victim but was one of the responders to another. Neither like to discuss it. 6 degrees of separation, there's bound to be people here who were close to one of them in some capacity, even if not now eventually. And that's not counting victims of similar but less notable gun violence. I suggest a trigger warning too.

You just put something in the thread title or maybe the first post along the lines of "may be triggering" or just "trigger warning" in the title. If it turns out it triggers no one, no harm done. If it might, victims of gun violence know to not read the thread if they're not feeling up to talking about or hearing about shit that's too close to home for them.

I really don't mean to come off as crass, but doesn't the title "mass shooting thread" suggest that there may be material within concerning mass shootings, violence and the like? Isn't that in itself a "trigger warning"?

^ I tend to agree that the thread title is more than sufficient.

Honestly, if someone wanted to avoid discussion focused on gun violence I think they would tend to avoid forums with names like Current Events and Politics, especially during times when a mass shooting is a highly politicised current event...

In pointing out their frequency, or keeping the entire forum from being dedicated to gun violence?

I'm not quite sure what this means or how it would be implemented.

Well for one the title is misleading. This last mass shootingwas a frat boy squabble and Im sure just every article involving a shot fired will be linked some senseless some with potential good reason..

You could add a warning in the title. Some people that have been through some traumatic events in their lives might not be expecting the candid conversations and it could put them in a mental world of hurt.

I don't think we should use trigger warnings. I don't agree with the use of them in academia and they certainly aren't necessary on this site. I'm not convinced that droppers isn't trying to troll us here.

Students Plan To Open-Carry Dildos Over Controversial Texas Campus Gun Law
Author: Joe Fletcher October 10, 2015 11:31 pm

More than 1,000 people have RSVP’d to attend an unusual protest at the University of Texas. In protest of a law that permits students to carry concealed weapons on campus, students are going to come to class wielding dildos.

After the legislation was signed into law by Texas Greg Abbot last June, protests at the University located in Austin have garnered national attention. The description for the protest’s event page reads:

“On June 1, 2015, Gov. Greg Abbott signed S.B. 11, also known as the ‘campus carry’ law. S.B. 11 provides that license holders may carry a concealed handgun throughout university campuses, starting Aug. 1, 2016. The law gives public universities some discretion to regulate campus carry.”

More than 160 professors at the university signed a letter speaking out against the law. One professor even went as far as to resign over the matter. The organizers of the protest want to point out the fact that while it would be perfectly fine for a student to carry a gun into the classroom, bringing a dildo in would get them in trouble. So now students are calling for people to take up the cry #CocksNotGlocks.

“The State of Texas has decided that it is not at all obnoxious to allow deadly concealed weapons in classrooms, however it DOES have strict rules about free sexual expression, to protect your innocence. You would receive a citation for taking a DILDO to class before you would get in trouble for taking a gun to class. Heaven forbid the penis.”

This protest is absolutely hilarious. American culture is absurd, we glorify violence in our media but vilify sex. This confronts that head on in a creative way. The protest is scheduled to take place on August 24, 2016. The organizers are encouraging everyone to come to the protest, even if they do not attend the University of Texas.

For every "justifiable" gun death in self defence, there are 34 innocent gun deaths

"In 2012, there were 8,855 criminal gun homicides in the FBI's homicide database, but only 258 gun killings by private citizens that were deemed justifiable, which the FBI defines as "the killing of a felon, during the commission of a felony, by a private citizen."

That works out to one justifiable gun death for every 34 unjustifiable gun deaths."

Nooooo, nononononono.

We already have two ongoing treads talking about this, isn't that enough?

I beg you moderators to merge this into the mass shooting thread, plenty of gun control politics there.

I'm sure dildos will be an effective deterrent of stopping a psychotic shooter... You know just as well as the signs that say no weapons allowed.
