Tramadol and hydrocodone

I'm just curious, how hard is it to get your pain doctor to begin prescribing tramadol on top of hydrocodone? Is this something very hard to get to happen?
I'm new to the site but have read discussions here for a while and figured id ask here. I have a chronic pain condition and went to the er and they gave me tramadol to take with my codones and omg relief!

Well it all depends on the history of your pain as well as your relationship with your doctor. Are you an honest patient and take your medication responsibly and are honest with them? Most importantly it comes down to trust and if your doctor is open to your concerns and suggestions and you are on good terms with them. Like myself, I have a great doctor who understand me, my condition and is not going to go hog wild on opioids beyond a certain opioid and amount per month or spaced out time you can get a refill. Now the laws have changed for Tramadol and Hydrocodone. Tramadol is an option all you have to do is ask your doctor about it and see what they say. If you are on good grounds and are not lets say being shady with your refills or got issues on paying your medical bills (yes doctors are now turning away many chronic pain patients due to inability to pay co-pays and such) well then I think you should have no issue.

Bottom line is this: If you got things in good standing you should not be sweating out bullets to discuss topics of pain control with your doctor. I for one am not all for the addiction and the doctor shoppers. So with that said I hope you find some workable medication combo's to combat your pain and be sure to discuss why you think the Tramadol would be better for you as well!

Thank you for your input.
I do have a good relationship with no history of misusing medicine or being shady. I'm having a really bad pain flare plus I'm supposed to start working for the first time since I got diagnosed three years ago. I'm going to add tramadol instead of asking for a huge increase on hydrocodone.

I went to the er for my flare and they gave me tramadol to take with my regular meds, and the relief was amazing. I just get really nervous asking for any kind of increase because of the current climate of prescribing.

I plan on asking to add tramadol and add one hydrocodone pill per day for the middle of the night as I haven't been sleeping much.

^^^^This was a spot on post.
Honestly, I wouldn't shut a Hydrocodone raise if the doctor goes for it. Just choose your words wisely. Anyway, let them know that the Hydrocodone is acting well for your ER medicine, and by chance, you were givin Tramadol in the hospital, and it was excellent for breakthrough pain. Add a touch of helps quality of life, and you should be good to go.

So , surprisingly enough, my doctor flipped out on me. He told me he's sick and tired of patients trying to be their own doctor and coming in with suggestions. He will NOT be changing anything and told me if I want to make more suggestions I should go to medical school.

Lovely man

Sorry to hear that. Maybe take your good medical records and go to another doctor if possible. I never had a doc flip out on me. It takes practice, but you have to learn to read them just like they read you.
Maybe you let things cool down and he will lighten up a bit. I

Well that is unfortunate to hear! I am sorry that happened to you. I would be thankful though for what you do have and that is a doctor who at least for now is giving you something to control your pain to a degree. He could have become so angry and just cut you off then if that is how he wanted to be. Perhaps he is a very closed minded doctor when it comes to being open to working with his patients, as some doctors are that way and its whatever they think period... I have seen a few of those for minor issues in my life and its just best you look at your situation objectively and either decide to remain with your current doctor or seek out another doctor whom may help you. Honestly though due to his reaction its probably due to part of his view on prescribing controlled substances as well as a bit of fear of the DEA on over prescribing and such forth...

I once was on a higher quantity of Hydrocodone per month for a bit due to a lot of work hours and such forth. Needless to say one day I went in and saw my doctor was told by them that I would only be prescribed xx amount of tablets instead of xxx amount. While it was only one pill less per day and I did agree that I had changed jobs and no longer even took that amount per day, I still got a comment from my doctor which went like this: If you think you need more pain pills than what I am going to comfortably write you from now on, you can call the DEA up and ask them if you can take more as I don't make the laws! So with that said I took what I was offered, still a lot, and came away knowing yes at least I got someone who is willing to treat my pain and listen to me! Thankfully my doctor was nice about it but with the DEA always cracking the whip and the push of doctors signing a petition to get all opioid pain medications prescribing labeling reclassified to short term pain and cancer pain only, just be thankful for now to get what you can!

If you want more advice I am willing to talk with you more just send me a pm or something!

Thank you very much, you are right. I posted while I was waiting for my prescriptions, he added gabapentin as well. So he did hear me that I needed more help, he just didn't want to add another controlled substance.

I have Crps and I'm waiting to get through the evaluation process to get a spinal simulator it put in. He made a lot of confusing comments. Like he wants me to increase my clonazepam, but I get that from my psychiatrist. There's no way she will increase me to what he wants.
