The addictive personality. ...true or false?

Was pondering whether we trot out this reason to excuse our behaviour or, in fact, this reason exists?

Are some of us more genuinely prone to an addictive lifestyle because of something we have little control over?

I'd say circumstance is alot to do with what creates the potential for addiction.

I've also seen some people in good social and career/relationship situations become totally addicted to certain stimulants after their first try. Cocaine and mephedrone spring to mind. Sure the same can be true for meth or heroin too.

Some people do inherit their addiction via genes.

I know a woman who has what she calls an addictive personality but both she and her brother have had to deal with drug addiction, so because of this they are very careful and do not use drugs, and watch other things that can be addictive like shopping/gambling, exercise, and other things.

I know other people who are addicts, their parents are addicts, their grandparents are addicts, and even their great-grandparents were addicted to drugs.

Some people do seem to have the ability to regulate their drug use no matter how deep they delve. Then again some people are great at making excuses and are also lazy, who is to say which is the biggest factor.

I'm the daughter of a sober alcoholic. I don't yet know how much bearing that has on my addiction and addictive behaviours. Maybe I never will. But this I know is true ~~~>>>
'One is too many and a thousand not enough'

I don't think it's a predilection toward being addicted to stuff. More like how much self-control one has

Most adults have the awareness to know when a habit is getting out of hand (impacting their lives in a measurable and negative way)

It's either not being able to control yourself or an apathetic attitude, perhaps linked to a mental disability

Yep. It also depends on what history you've had with your family. There are people son and grandsons of addicts who hate drugs because of their bad childhood experiences. It is inherited but it can or cannot be developed depending on a lot of factors, i.e., personality, environment, instructions, previous history, etc.

My dad use to drink alot, so did my my grandfather on my mom's side, then my mom the past few years was drinking alot but now has stopped, I drink like a fish in high school everynight, bymyself, also took a good amount of valium then also...then found weed and quit drinking and the Val's but Smoked from the time I woke up till I went to bed, then found opiates, continued to smoke weed along with opiates and have the occasional benzo. After years of that got on Suboxone, started taking benzo's again, trying to slow down on the benzo's now cuz I don't want a full-blown habbit of that also, really was trying to chase the feeling opiates use to give me, worked when they were taken in large doses(8-10mg range). But anyway, yes. Addiction runs in my family and I usually end up using whatever I take ALOT. Even when I had a script for Adderall in my early 20's, the bottle would be gone in a week, and honestly I don't even like uppers that much....

I don't know if its a real thing or not but if it is then I have it for sure.

QFMe.

Booze, speed, heroin, psychedelics, gambling, you name it, if I don't watch myself carefully I tend to slide into using rather too much for my own good.

This made me lol. Same boat man, same boat.

This could be true. But self-control or willpower could have a relation with genes. Because my friend is a drug addict, and over half his family is/has been as well.

Edit: Of course, this is only one example that vouches for my argument. But I'm sure you see my point.

The is some pretty strong science behind addiction; Google something like 'The science of addiction'. It's fairly hard to deny that some people are far more predisposed to addiction.

They are, but so are the experiences they've gone through while under care of their parents/relatives.
Even though you get it in your genes you may find it horrible to relate with due to 'your' child's history.

Like those ppl who hate their parents bc they were always high and they don't want to be the same for their kids.

I get your point of view and agree with that. I'm just thinking about few examples I had seen during my life.

I can't say one way or the other I'm just not sure but I had starting in my early teens undiagnosed OCD. I would be into something and throw myself totally into it and obsess about what I was into and get bored change course and do the same thing with something else. For example I used to collect sports cards and when I did I wouldn't buy a pack I'd buy it buy the box and at one point had over 100,000 sports cards until I got into collecting comics.I then sold all of my cards at a loss and ended up buying thousands of dollars worth of comics(I was a teenager mind you) got bored sold them and started drugs. I started with weed smoked a shitload got bored then went to coke and it just continued to progress.

I'm not saying everyone goes this route but I felt like I could have possibly predisposed(not to mention all the men in my family abuse some kind of substance or did).

At the same time I feel what One Thousand Words is saying. It can be a loser mentality to say well it's fate I had no choice so it's not my fault at what I've become so you just roll with it. We all make are beds and we all must lie in them. We don't need to perpetuate the cycle.

In regards to addiction, no one in my family (from what I know) has had any experiences with drugs.
None of them were alcoholics. So, nobody but myself to blame.

My parents have always remembered me of that fact when I was young. What was I to tell?
And now I feel responsible for my kids.

I remember wanting to try everything - curiosity was what made me start, I guess.
That together with a lot of anger from experiences I had gone through in my childhood.
No genes, as far as I know took any part in the addiction process.

Interesting, I think same usually breeds more of the same etc so a family of musicians typically goes on to produce more musicians, athletes, professors, almost any walk of life I think can typically have a higher chance of sustaining itself within a family ad infinitum given enough time.

Simple example, I see myself becoming a teacher again in the future as my parents were and I can't explain that. If they were mechanics, shop keepers, etc it would probably be the same way.

And I do think (agree) that it could be linked to genes, though eventually it all dissolves into the nature vs nurture argument.
