Why is there such a disconnect between European and American humor? In your opinion

It's true we have no decent sitcoms anymore, but in reality they've always been few and far between anyway. I used to love the 70s & 80s sitcoms as a kid, but looking back on them now, they were mostly fuckin dire - e.g. 'On the buses', 'Man about the House', 'The Liverbirds' - though I think 'Rising Damp' was a classic, as was 'Porridge' and 'Only Fools & Horses'
Yeah, there was a lot of lousy telly about in those days. But we watched it anyway, 'cos there was literally nothing else on .....
Also, whereas we tend to excel in satire and irony, the Americans excel in parody, such as the 'Airplane' and 'Naked Gun' films.
What did you think of A Touch of Cloth? That had an Airplane-style bombardment of gags, visual and spoken, that really called for a second or third watching to be sure you did not miss any of them. Still definitely all very British, though. Whereas The Thin Blue Line really put the Plod in Plod .....

Was that the one with the (ambiguously but not) lesbian detective? I thought that was really good, especially the endless sight gags, Dat Dere Youth Centre was a good 'un. I never liked much older British comedy aside from Are You Being Served? and Fawlty Towers which I still watch all the way through once a year or so. A lot of it seemed a bit sort of safe and samey. Funnily enough I mostly watch US comedies now, stuff like Arrested Development and Always Sunny in Philadelphia though both shows have a lot in common with Touching Cloth as far as sight gags, recurring jokes and puns go. Feel like comedy is becoming a lot more unified now due to everyone being on the internet all the time, sort of takes away the boundaries, introduces people to new stuff, a lot of the people I find genuinely hilarious online are American though I don't get the sense of humour of the lounge and think EADD is like it is probably due to it being smaller, people knowing each other IRL and the relatively small number of active posters among other things

I never got into that, think cos my Dad used to watch it endlessly (still does according to Mum) and it just bored me though always crack up at the chandelier bit. Reminds me I really like Mr Bean actually, never thought I would but Rowan Atkinson is fucking hilarious in pretty much everything so.

There was a thread on reddit the other day about which recurring jokes people think are funniest and Arrested Development and Always Sunny kept cropping up. Arrested Development is great on the second run through because of them.

Just went to look at gifs of Gob and was reminded of Franklin, oh god lol.

Edit: Coincidently, I also enjoyed Will Arnett as Devin in 30 Rock.

LOL.. I read that as Chandler and was about to make a right tit of myself and tell you he was in friends. :D

Someone mentioned the Lee Mack sitcom earlier (Not Going Out). It's one of those so-bad-it's-awesome affairs, so give it another go and you may grow to like it...

I can't stand any of the American sitcoms, but I appreciate the fact that I'm in the minority here. Only US comedy that I actually enjoy is Family Guy.

They tried to introduce american sitcoms in britain various times in the past and it just hasn't taken in the same way - eg 2.4 children (a copy of rosanne), coupling (copying friends), the upper hand (copying who's the boss (old fogey memory test: did you know the little girl in the upper hand (joe mcgann's daughter) is Linda off of eastenders? (she actualy looks just the same (in here somewhere if you care))).

There's something in the cultures that makes us (generally) different audiences i think (discuss... ;)). I agree the tastes are converging - though this globalisation of culture is a worrying thing too (danger of hegemonic american/english culture with all the lesser cultures going the way of the aztecs or maoris).

Partly i think the attitude americans in general have to authority and the mainstream is largely different to the more cynical british default - this alters how we both think of big telly shows - americans (in general) seem to love their big shows in a way british people wouldn't. All my twisted subjective viewpoint of course :)

Edit: i agree with you curious (though i do like curb your enthusiasm sometimes)

I can't stand Americam comedy either. Most is more about how good looking the people are compared with comic value. Take friends for instance. Total utter trash.

There are very few cross overs from Europe into the lounge which is American humor in a nutshell.

The Lounge isn't "American humor in a nutshell"; such a thing doesn't exist.

The Lounge is a clique of (mainly US-based) people who think being nasty to each other is funny and the only way to be accepted. It has nothing to do with "American HumoUr".

The UK and the US both have a sliding scale of shit > genius comedy stuff on TV. Many of my favourite comedy performers & shows are American.

I tried to say this in a long-winded way. Couldn't agree more.

Yep America is on top when it comes to media and entertainment in general. Outside of 60-70s British rock, top gear, couple aussie bands, and donovan I cannot think of a single piece of media I consume that is not American. Maybe Vice I think they are Canadian, but I can only take so much pop journalism. Alasdairm is a pretty regular poster in the lounge is Scottish originally but has become Americanized, and while he tries to hang I do not think he fully understands the deprecating humor. TL is Humor and not Humour so that in its own right is a great distinction.

Ah..But, it's not all about the media and arts is it?

Our differences cut through more than that, hence why we never quite swing the same way with our humour.

..But, I do like how we share and enjoy each other socially. Maybe us druggies should try that little harder, but I appreciate it is awkward with the Aussies in the mix, whether we like it or not! :p

I like John Oliver: The Last Week Tonight. It's a good edge.
