EADD Film Recommendations v5 - TBC

I can highly recommend 'All This Mayhem' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2938416/

utterly tragic true / documentary story of drug abuse and success at a young age, I couldn't stop thinking about it for days after, it struck a deep chord with me. It's also on netflix at the moment.

Watched this on your recommendation. Remind me to give you a slap if I ever meet you in person. That whole thing could have been trimmed down into a 10 minute conversation. 1/10

Watched Kubricks 'Barry Lyndon' last night for the first time in years - i forgot how funny it was. 3 hour costume drama about the biggest arsehole ever imagined

One of my all-time fave films that =D

I love it so much I last watched it at a local film club whilst sat - for all three hours (or so) - on ultra-narrow church pews. Talk about a pain in the arse 8o

(but very much worth it for that film <3)

Watched Love - Not bad space isolation type film - dragged a bit, but i guess that goes with the territory - bit 'arty'; not much of a spoiler to say it gets a bit weird later on. Some (eg my female co-watchers) will find it boring but i quite liked it. (i actually preferred it to interstellar the way it only implied stuff, but i'm probably weird (don't take that as a recommendation of this as much as a 'meh' for interstellar (though most people i know IRL loved interstellar so i definitely am weird)

That's odd. I mentioned this ages ago - I suspect in the TV thread as I believe it was a TV movie? - and Interstellar is exactly what I would compare it to. Or rather, the film Interstellar was trying to be. Maybe I'll get more from that latter one from further viewing but I have honestly loathed every film by Christopher Nolan I've seen. I find them vacuous beyond belief.

... has anyone seen "Stalker" by Tarkovsky?

Yes. One of the finest films ever made imo <3

Yeah I guess you're right about its influence. Even the mighty Star Wars kind of ripped it off for Coruscant in the prequels. Speaking of highly influential sci-fi films, have you / has anyone seen "Stalker" by Tarkovsky? It's a Soviet-era Russian philosophical sci-fi. Watching it now, it was really ahead of its time in pioneering the sort of grey, bleak, drab wasteland of the near future which has become pretty standard (think "Children of Men" or "The Road), plus it's just a brilliant film.

Stalker? oooo tell me more?! May give me tips on how best to target my victims (joking) :D

Seriously, was it worth watching???

Really didn't enjoy Ex Machina, least enjoyable film I've seen for ages. Gave up on it about an hour in and took some drugs and thought about stuff and cuddled up to Dan while he watched the end.

Half watching A.I now which is a good film but I feel tired and cba to pay attention.

I didn't rate Ex-Machina either. Even the occasional tits and arse wasn't enough to make it a decent flick. (pun intended)

I thought it was a decent film - really well shot and acted, dealing with a well worn subject in an artful, if not wholly original manner. I didn't find the ending predictable. In fact, as it seemed the most obvious ending, i was sure it would go a different way.

The only gripe I had was with the seemingly incongruous violence at the end, which appeared to be tacked on to keep any knuckle-draggers satisfied.

There was massive gaping holes in the plot line from start to finish, but meh, simple things for simple people.

Dead right, the allegation of plot holes being one such simple thing. Often laid claim to by the unimaginative, but rarely justified. As if the most important thing any film has to achieve to qualify as decent is an unambiguous, straightforward narrative.

Regarding Ex Machina... Anyone else see 'MGH' engraved into the stone wall whilst they are talking about
giving Ava sexuality
? or have I gone batshit mad?

Doing a search for easter eggs turns up nothing but Massachusettes General Hospital seems to actually be related to some sort of computing.

I can't remember seeing it - I think I will still have it saved on my harddrive, will give it another look if I have.

I liked Ex Machina. Seemed like a good movie, indeed nothing spectacular but at least it is well lroduced and acted. Plot holes i dont mind if theres some point to the film.
Watched Jurrasic World recently. Decent enough but i really cant see why they keep doing the whole dinosaurs in a park theme over and over...

The Terminator film seems to be getting shit reviews. What a surprize there

Watched inherent vice the other night after having a shufty through this thread. I both enjoyed it and was left confused by it. Maybe it was all the bongs I'd smoked....

Seen the shit reviews also & a friend of mine said its pretty shite.. its a shame. shame the series got messed up in general. the future war scenes from T1 and T2 always spring to mind as how i reckon T3 and T4 should have been instead of the bollocks that got made

I brought my daughter to see Songs of the Sea today, its an animation (for those you ain't heard of it) and really easy on the eye, old fashioned hand drawn stuff but think Paul Klee on the faces Klimt on the colours and design, with Kadinsky adding abstract details on the pencils. It really has to be seen, nice music too.

Gannetsarewe - have you seen Big Hero 6 or Hotel Transylvania ? Both animated and great for kids.

I watched Justice League, Gods and Monsters the other day and enjoyed it but not really suitable for young children. Quite like the look of 'Inside Out' so will be watching that when I get a chance.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya (recent Ghibli film) was also really beautiful, done in a watercolour style. Based on a Japanese myth so the plot is pleasingly mad too.
