Yeah I guess you're right about its influence. Even the mighty Star Wars kind of ripped it off for Coruscant in the prequels. Speaking of highly influential sci-fi films, have you / has anyone seen "Stalker" by Tarkovsky? It's a Soviet-era Russian philosophical sci-fi. Watching it now, it was really ahead of its time in pioneering the sort of grey, bleak, drab wasteland of the near future which has become pretty standard (think "Children of Men" or "The Road), plus it's just a brilliant film.
I haven't seen Stalker yet - I'm saving it till I can go see it at the cinema. I started watching it once or twice, but realised I wasn't in the right frame of mind. I did the same with Tarkovsky's Solaris, but when I finally got to see it on the big screen, it was more than worth the wait. The anti grav scene remains the most transcendental cinema experience I've ever had.
His films do require patience though, and I can't trust myself not to be distracted at home . I'm looking forward to seeing Stalker more than any other film , though. Good taste
