I'm aware you can but how hard it it to get it ?

I suffer from a range of things and have becomes a recluse basically and I would really like to be independent (kind of?) which would involve Disability ..

I have applied in the past only to be turned down unsure why honestly I've never been s fully functional part of society in my entire life my most accomplished things on paper would be 3 months at t mobile and multiple arrests for thefts/drugs/dui.

i have since cleaned up everything but suffered a sever accident (car crash) and now to add to all my suffering I have ptsd and struggle to go anywhere , I might not of left my house in a few months now easily ...

I am not looking for pitty but I am curious how to get disability and if anyone here has it (the state gives you something like welfare Im assuming ?) ..

I don't want this forever but I have to accept who I am now and it's not something I can just change in a week or 2 ..nor is it something I want to handle while living with my parents as they accidently make it harder for me to adjust at all ..

any stories , info , help even sharing your own stories is appreciated . Feeling hopeless at the moment lik I'm trapped .

Depends on the state, what were the reasons you were turned down in the past? Did you have a doctor that was involved to put the paperwork in. Did you try a lawyer?

Well one thing to consider is how much you will receive. If you have only worked 3 months in your life you will recieve the minimum which is not enough to live a normal life on. When I was 21-22 I had a botched surgery that resulted in me not being able to work, my doctor put the paperwork in and I got an acceptance letter stating I would receive under a hundred a month. Suffice to say I didn't take it.

FYI, if you get on disability you will find it even harder to find a job, because jobs HATE people on disability. I was a recruiter once and we were told to trash any resumes from people who mentioned disability.

Sorry to sound patronising but we need to know what country you live in?

Thanks for the heads up on the last part but right now I'm feeling like if I don't get some support I'll just fall apart and never get up again if you know what I mean ? ..

I've worked a few times but under the table and the others never longer than 3 months bc I can't do it mentally sadly ..(was forced to drop out of high school bc Id always be late or not show up and they called my probation officer but it was my anxiety and insomnia ) .

I may sound pathetic but idk the reasons I was turned down but I wasn't shocked since they seem to turn ppl down a lot and mental illness is so hard to tell as I'm sure we are all aware , where as physical is right there you go you see it its proof done , my parents have all the paper work I have stuff from when I was a child at Yale to now (26) and I can't talk on phones in my house or do anything really (it's sort of in my head type thing) ... But my parents handled most of last time and my therapist at the time helped me threw the rest and said I would probably get denied the first time a lot of people do but reapply .

Didn't try a lawyer ..

here this is how I live ..I wake up avoid everyone , go no where except bathroom /stay in my room (bathrooms the room b4 mine), I stock snacks and water in my room so I don't have to go out to the kitchen when family is there...I don't want to go anywhere , I dont/can't do phone calls and most days I probably don't hear my own voice easily ..no loud noises besides TV to block any other sounds like breathing lol from "escaping" my room and then go to sleep ..

i do do manage a workout in my room and my gf i can talk to if no ones home and I feel good , she comes over we hang out here ..

i feel crippled ...

How much time has passed since you were denied? My best advice for you is to get a law firm to handle your appeal. They won't charge you anything until you get approved and then they take a percentage. You might not get SSD since you need to have a certain amount of work credits, but you may qualify for SSI since it's need-based. It's important that you regularly keep seeing your therapist/psych doctor. If it's hard for you to talk on the phone, have one of your parents make some calls to retain a lawyer. It's a long process but don't give up!

Thank you , it's a struggle hopefully I'll figure everything out one day .

SSI/SSD isn't dependent on how much you've worked as far as I know. The only full time job I ever had lasted 4 months and I get the full ammount for SSI.

Unless you have some medical things holding you back you'll be getting SSI. That's what people get for mental problems. It took me 3 years and 3 tries to get it, the last one with the help of a lawyer. Mental problems are sort of hard to prove and a lot of people will try to abuse the system, so my best advice would be to get a lawyer. Like Calderone said, the lawyer won't take any money unless you win your case. I believe it's about 30%. Also make sure you apply for back pay.

Thank you , sad it takes that many tries for those that need it yet there's probably fakers on it .

^Do you actually believe that? Look how hard it is for you to get on it. It's a barely subsistence level income. How exactly do you think these "fakers" are getting on disability and what do you think their motivation is?

I know that there are allot of people scamming it hard. Last time I was hospitalized about 50% were in there just to get documentation so that they could apply. One patient would lecture others on exactly how to get on and stay on, and that they were entitled to it, lol.

And these people told you that they had no medical conditions and were "scamming" the system?

I've given advice to people about how to get onto disability payments - I know from a few years working in employment services how ridiculously complex and unintuitive the system is, and how it's deliberately set up to ensure large numbers of failed applications. If I can help someone with a disability get through that and receive the income they need to survive when they can't work, I'll do anything short of fronting up to their medical appointments myself.

Maybe the person at the hospital has the same attitude.

I just want to say if you're true to what you said/your claim of helping others then youre a great person .

Why is it so hard to fathom that there are people that abuse/cheat the system? Lol come on dude

Its great you have helped others but not everyone is a saint!!

I don't think I'm a great person or a 'saint'. I just have a little more knowledge about these systems than the average punter and think it's shite that they're so inaccessible to people who need them.

Because it just doesn't make sense to me that the system is so inaccessible that people with easy to demonstrate disabilities can't access payments, or are being forced to repeatedly prove that they're "still disabled", or are being bullied into work they can't do, while (at the same time, in the same system) people with no disabilities are somehow able to cheat the system en masse?

I heard they've made it a lot harder here in the U.S. for people to qualify for or even keep their disability benefits once they've qualified for them.
