I must admit that i have a lot of admiration for those that have the physical and mental strength to quit heroin and subs in a very short space of time. (Im not going to name the atleast half a dozen members that have done this but you know who you are).
IME though the whole experience is easier for some than others, it seems to be most difficult for people that have other psychological issues to contend with even if they can cope with the physical side. It might seem like those that struggle with it seem like total wimps compared to the 'hard guys' who get on with their rattles with minimum fuss, but in defense of 'wimpishness' it can be a part of a bigger problem, like depression and non existent self confidence and self esteem for example.
I just wrote a massive reply to this, which I ended up losing contents of. Just as well as the people you're referring to I wasn't so polite about lol you know me, MDB, am honest n say it as it is.
People who talk like that are silly. In terms of strength n physicality towards any given substance, it differs from person to person but as you say a lot of addiction is psychological.
If people could easily get off a drug n others find this more difficult it doesn't make the more of a wimp or whatever. That type of talk is ignorant n I lose any kind of respect for anyone who talksike this. There's also other commitments that people have as to why they're not able to get off things cold turkey, for instance work, children to name a few.
If two people both broke their legs at the same time yet one heeled with six weeks, the other within three months, would people be calling the latter a "wimp?" There may be an element of psychological thinking in both of these people n for the first person it may have aided their physical recovery, thus it was a tools, used in a positive n productive way - to aid recovery. The latter person may not be aware that positive psychological thinking may quicken his physical recovery of mending his broken leg n getting him back on his feet. Again, would people say to him/her - "hurry up n recovery you're being a bloody wimp?"
This soft n hard drugs talk is ludicrous n none other than social in-grout favouritism, out-group discrimination (Henri Tafel). I've spoken to LOTS of people whom have been addicted to hard drugs n every time I've explained my psychological feelings of addiction, have all expressed the same feelings. Because addiction and physical dependency are NOT the same n so many people get them confused n then we have all of this "you're a wimp" talk instead of people pulling together n supporting one another. No one is an enemy here. Addiction is. Addiction is the beast that plays n toys with the minds, manipulates, lurs the people in n spits them out, time and time and time again. How does addicts turning on other addicts, dismissing them as wimps n making them feel worst, help ANYONE fight against addiction?
And what about behavioural addicts? Gambling addiction, Internet addiction, shopping addiction - are these people wimps too?
I'll leave it there.
Oh just come out dentist. He gave me a leaflet titled, 'What is Gum Disease' lol
