What You Listening To? Part XXIV - The Conventional Road to Cropredy

I'm quite a big Nina Simone fan but have never actually heard that before.

I wasn't really feeling the Oyaarss, to be honest. The Orb, however, I think requires some further listening and probably a place on my upcoming 1p-lsd listening list. My electronic music when tripping doesn't go much further than Shpongle as I'm not too educated in such things. The majority of my trips are solo, so Shpongle fits in pretty well but it's sometimes too intense to lend itself to social trips..and really isn't to everyone's taste. The Orb seems like something that would lend itself to that a bit better.

This is all preliminary though. It's quite an assumption, having only just listened to them for the first time (sorry for not any other time you've posted them :p), and one track at that.

Kinesthesia - Sanq (Autechre Mix)

Merzboz - Humming Bird

Merzbow - Cannibalism of Machines

Merzbow - I Lead You Towards Glorious Times

As an aside, I can't help but wonder at what point the "'sall disco innit" brigade draw the line between "IDM," "noise" and "industrial". To me it's a continuum. Anybody in aforementioned camp do feel free to suggest categories and I'll happily find examples that make a mockery of them.

Sammy: Yes I am looking at you :p;)<3

It's often completely arbitrary as to which category an artist falls into; indeed, some of the stuff I listen to would appear to cross those boundaries quite readily and regularly. I hate to mention Swans, but they were having underground (gay) club hits under the name 'Skin' long before the term 'IDM' was coined.

The general rule, though, is that anything with sampled 'beats' tends to turn me off. I'm sick of hearing John Bonham's kick drum, and most of it just makes me think of white 'deejay' chaps with big headphones and poorly-fitting t-shirts, with trustafarians as far as the eye can see.

I do make exceptions, The (early) Orb being one, and you may be surprised at just how many genre-busting tunes I have up my own sleeve.

I just think it's a right auld lark to post punk rock and say everything else is disco.

Never was enamoured with Merzbow. Like many Japanese artists, tries way too hard and doesn't quite grasp the subtleties. I have friends who go in for it, but not for me.

If you find Shpongle "too intense" Oyaarss is probably best saved for some later time, Don ;)

You seriously never heard The Orb?!? 8o

The Orb & Lee "Scratch" Perry - Fact 341

<3
I just find it too intense sometimes for actually talking to people, as it's very distracting.

I listened to the the Lee Scratch Perry collaboration while cooking tonight and it was right up my street, so thank you :)

This was on the Planxty playlist as I was cooking also!

Andy Fraser, bassist with Free and co-composer of the classic “All Right Now,” has died at 62. A cause of death was not immediately announced, but Fraser had been battling both cancer and AIDS recently.
Fraser, who was part of John Mayall‘s Bluesbreakers as a teenager before co-founding Free with Paul Rodgers in the late ’60s, died yesterday. He left behind two daughters, his mother and three siblings, according to Classic Rock magazine. ”A survivor of both cancer and AIDS, Andy was a strong social activist and defender of individual human rights,” announced an official statement on his death.
Free were active for only a few years at the turn of the ’70s, but they released two Top 10 U.K. albums, including 1970′s Fire and Water, which rose to No. 17 in the U.S. on the momentum of international success for “All Right Now.” Free also reached the Top 10 in the U.K. with a pair of singles, “My Brother Jake” and “Wishing Well.”
Fraser’s AIDS diagnosis came in the ’80s, followed by a diagnosis of Karposi’s Sarcoma, a form of cancer. He later rebounded to play with Rodgers in 1994 for a performance at that year’s Woodstock anniversary. He released a solo album in 2005, Naked … And Finally Free!, followed by On Assignment a few years later. More recently, Fraser had been involved with the Rock Against Trafficking charity.
For all of this fame as an upfront bassist on songs like “All Right Now,” Fraser admitted that he had trouble seeing himself as a standout at the instrument. “To be quite honest, I never thought of myself as a bass player,” he told DMME in 2005. “I actually only used the bass guitar because the other kids in our school band wanted to be the singer or drummer or guitarist. I have always thought of myself as doing whatever was necessary to make the whole thing work.”
