I see it as more like, we're hardware and software. Only, the software only exists as long as the hardware on which it's stored is working properly. Now, if you could take a snapshot of the state of a human brain, it should be possible to download it into an emulator. You could then test out various what-if scenarios, by giving different stimuli. And if anything happened to your original body, "you" would still be technically "alive" as long as at least one copy of "you" was still running under emulation somewhere -- you would only be dead when the last copy of you was wiped out. By the time we've advanced that far, we might well also have the ability to do direct molecular manipulation -- meaning it should be possible to build a body from scratch to match the brain's internal model, then flash a copy of your software into its brain, and you could then walk and talk again .....
