Splishy splashy - aka the wine guide

living in Hunter Valley, near over 100 wineries is hard work tasting them local wines.

I have recently taken up drinking Tahbilk's "2005 Chairmans Red" via their website, $59.40 a dozen with free freight. From VIC, not Hunter Valley.... also was surprised that Woolie's Bottlo sells some of great Hunter Wines cheaper than Hunter Valley's Cellar Door Sales....

I am a wine snob, these wines taste like $20-$30 wines in fine wine shops, great baragin, easy, smooth, not too "oaky/woody" on nose, very impressive. I once covered the bottle and gave a tasting glass to a fellow family member who is fat in the wallet department, always buys $30-50 bottle of wines, he was very impressed with this $5.95 a bottle wine :)

I've been using Wine Selectors for a few years now. Really great service. You get a dozen bottles of mixed white and red wine. It's all really top shelf wine which has been carefully selected by a panel of wine elitists, and they do their own write up on each bottle (not the bullshit you usually read on the back) and they also recommend food to be eaten with each bottle also.

I got signed up when i passed a stand @ The Royal Melbourne Show. I was sold when they told me, that if i don't enjoy a bottle I can call them and they will refund the money to my credit card. Yes I have done it and they have never said no. Mind you I've only had 2 bottles that I didn't enjoy.

Costs me $170 delivered so it works out to be about $14 a bottle.. pretty good considering most of them are $30+ bottles of wine.

I say if you wanna try something
different + interesting
buy a bottle of this:

durif.jpg

Deen De Bortoli 'Vat 1' 2008 Durif

About $13~

Tastes like earth + tannins + covers the
bottom of your palate in a really interesting way.

Yeah, the durif isnt a bad drop, long time since I had a glass, hmmm, tempted to get me a bottle and have another taste

This stuff is the shiz:

NO hangover no matter how much i drink, hardly any weight gain as opposed to other wines, and it tastes lovely!

If you're a wino - try it! For cask wine is bloody awesome. Compared to a lot of wines it's bloody awesome, imo.

lol, chateau de cardboard! =D

I had a couple of a few tonight :)

Oh & nice bump.

Of all the goon I've sampled I prefer the 2L Banrock Station Casks the best.

Been drinking a lot of port lately. Big glass and heaps of ice works for me.

Havent been game to buy a cask as plenty of cheap bottles to try first.

I went through a Port phase a few years ago. Great to have a glass of in winter.

Last weekend I had a glass of 2002 Henschke HOG and it was yummmmmm-bo. Definitely one to savor slowly, especially given the price... yikes!

Word. Banrock use their bottled wines for casks too so they're a pretty safe bet.

Some things I'm enjoying at the moment.

Any wines by my future husband Telmo Rodriquez http://www.google.com.au/images?q=telmo%20rodriguez&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1280&bih=636

Dry as fuck german riesling (Von Buhl, Dr Loosen)

Delicious buttery Australian chardonnays (Toolangi Estate, Yering Station).

I'm still having a love affair with sauvignon blanc. Squealing Pig went down very, very well on Saturday in the botanical gardens.

Sirenya Pinot Grigio is a nice drop too. The whole selection have fabulous labels.

Devil's Lair Fifth Leg - Shiraz/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon

It's a nice smooth wine going down but by fuck it must have a lot of something in it because I have the worst sleeps after I've had a bottle or two. Still bloody good for the price though!!!

^ I was just thinking about you and your boyf! I can't wait to see you at H's bday! It's been too long.

I'm drinking Loire Valley blahblahblah I still don't care, really. I was drinking cask wine for a few days and was perfectly happy with it, but have some middle class hang up whereby I can't buy cask wine when I'm by myself. It's the most inconvenient pretension I've ever had.

Well the good thing a bout buying yourself a cask of wine is that you 1) save money and 2) it will last you a few days - or a week (depending on how much you drink of course) and you wont have to be bothered going to the shops as often as if you were to buy a bottle.

I am all about the cask - savings, convenience... and for some strange reason no hangovers. It works out very well for moi :)

The down side to buying a cask ... you will most likely drink every night until it's all gone =D

What is this, I don't even... I'd swear the worst hangovers of my life were from my highschool/uni days drinking goon! Of course those were 4lt/5lt sacks of whatever was cheapest. I think the first time I got completely blotto was a $6 cask of sunnyvale fruity lexia *vomits*

I'm drinking a fair bit of NZ sav blanc at the moment, will probably drink more shiraz as the weather gets cooler :)

I've never had fruitylexia or passion pop. A friend's parents always had cask wine in their fridge so I remember we used to put that in our drink bottles occasionally from year 5-8, until I made friends with someone whose mum was more that happy to buy alcohol for us. So dodgy, on reflection :)

Finishing off a bottle of 09 Jamiesons Run Cab Shiraz Merlot, nothing flash but very easy on the palate.

In the cooler weather I prefer Metalas Cab Sav, got a nice bite to it. Always been a favourite :)
