[MEGA]Community Growing advice, tips, tricks, & experiences Part 5 (2012-2013)

Okay thanks, fair enough.

I'm planning my next grow of Ace Seeds Rotten Panda, a cross of UK Cheese (i.e. a skunk pheno) and orient express. I've decided I'm going to grow using the easiest method possible with the least amount of maintenance required this time round, so I bought five autopots and am going to grow using coco and Plant Magic coco nutes and Growers Ark nutes next time. I'll probably do a SCROG but ultimately I'm going to grow vertically since this is the most efficient growing style.

I'm going to make a bonsai mum, not just for clones but to make a proper bonsai, merging two hobbies into one ;) I honestly haven't seen a bonsai with a trunk thick like this Japanese red maple bonsai so it should be interesting:

My current plants have a layer of Perlite half way then good fertile soil then a big layer of perlite on top. Some of my pots I shot extra holes in before transplanting into them with a .22 lr so they all seem to drain well, using pretty big pots too and have one plant per pot bar 2 where I have 2 plants in each big pot. They are only a few weeks old at the moment so I water one day and then organic fish emulsion one etc. They are all growing really fast and are all looking very healthy.

A few I topped early and they are growing well, thinking about topping them all and retopping the ones I've topped, but gonna stick with a few for now and keep my hands off my topping scissors for the time being atleast, must admit topping them makes em look cooler + ultimately bigger (know it supposed to increase the yield).

Anything more I've forgot/don't know of, that's relatively cheap and will aid in the end harvest yield, I'm growing quite a few plants so I like good fish emulsion due to it being cheapish and effective, basically let me know if I'm leaving out something most of you seasons growers would regard as essential for outdoor growing ?

I plan on adding more flowering-specific nutes closer to flowering time and plan on carrying on fish emulsioning every 2 or 3 days every alternate day ATM as it is REALLY hot and jus light to mediumly watering in the late eves, proper summer ATM here.

Will attach a pic of my lil babies (almos not so lil anymore) soon.

Your plants are looking 100 times better than your last season's plants, man! Keep it up and you are going to have an amazing harvest.



Edit: I noticed some are double planted in one pot? You may run into space problems with the roots; you may need to re-pot some of the plants if they get too big.

yol haven't started growing, ever.
this isn't so much to do with growing but what you can do with your weed and stuff

Perfect. It sounds like you already have a plan installed.

I can see the ones (at least one) that you topped, they are looking looking great!
 
pretty plants, they have a good colour but some droop from overwatering.

Not enough info to give you a proper answer. What do you mean by 'small' ? What is the airflow situation ? How hot is too hot ? That's gunna depend on where you are and what time of year it is.
For what its worth - lots of smaller CFLs are better than one big one imo. But again kinda hard to say with what little info youve provided
 
Anyone using coco as a grow medium?

My last couple grows have been with coco as opposed to soil, I have to say I am glad I made the switch. The only pain in the ass is having to mix up nutrients virtually every watering, but I am getting better growth rates, way less issues with insects and my end product is tasting just as good or better than the stuff I have grown in soil. My ash burns white as well which indicates there are no nutrients left in my end product.

I admit the improved taste could easily be from the fact I am running purchased genetics as opposed to the bag seed I have grown in soil, my curing technique has probably improved a little as well.

I notice a lot of the growers in US Medical states seem to grow almost exclusively in soil, I always bought into the idea that soil grown cannabis was a better tasting and healthier product than cannabis grown in coco and hydroponic mediums, but my recent experience seems to indicate this is false, or at least overstated. I am wondering what other Bluelighters experience is with coco versus soil and which they prefer overall.

I wish I had the chance to try coco, but I never did. It's fairly popular from what I understand though. I know a couple growers in this thread (Carl!) that used coco as a medium, and they loved it.

As for the soil vs coco vs hydro thing, I find that it is mostly dependent on the strain used. A lot of strains are not "finicky" with the medium used, but I found that some strains just act different in different mediums. Some strains will shine in soil, while others don't really care.

In the end though, it's about how well you feed them and how well you flushed them.

As long as the ash is white after burned (like you said) and there are no tiny "sparks" when smoking (again properly flushed), then I really don't care too much about what medium was used.
 
It is doubtful I would ever run straight perlite as a medium, I know people get good results doing it but truthfully I hate dealing with perlite. Just in case you are not aware, perlite is volcanic glass and inhaling it is bad for your health, you should really wear a dust mask when dealing with it and pre wet it before working with it whenever possible.

I do incorporate perlite in my grows but only because I can buy premixed coco and perlite, I have found that plants grow considerably faster in coco mixed with perlite than they do in straight coco.
 
Perlite is good, I've grown in buckets with pure perlite before with OK results, just put the drainage hole about an inch or two from the bottom of the bucket to leave a little reservoir in the bottom of the bucket if using it pure, otherwise it'll drain too fast. A mix of coco & perlite is easier to deal with than just perlite, if I was doing a soil or coco grow I'd certainly mix some perlite in to keep the mix light & allow the roots to get plenty of oxygen. It is dusty & you should take precautions not to breathe the dust.
