Info on helping make medication more effective

So I am a long term opiate user for chronic pain, and currently take Dilaudid 8mg and Norco (10/325). My pain normally is fairly well managed, however I am waiting for a root canal, and this nasty tooth just broke (exposing nerves??). For whatever reason I am hitting insane pain levels, and just orally taking this pain medication is NOT helping. I haven't been "creative" in the past regarding the ways in which I take my meds- but my tolerance for them (I'm sure) isn't helping in this situation. I'm open for any ideas!! Thanks
Roxy

If you have exposed dental nerves you could pay a visit to the nearest ER if possible. Years ago something similar happened to me after I dislodged a partial filling one evening. Pain was so insane I went to the hospital where I was promptly given 10mg IV morphine. Provided huge relief.

local anesthetics (lidocaine, benzocaine) are the best option for something like that, NSAIDs may help as well

there are some sorts of pain opioids don't really handle.

Oil of clove will deaden the nerves and take away the pain almost immediately. If you chose to use it be very careful not to get it anywhere except on the tooth in question.

Btw, what Sekio said about NSAID's is true when it comes to many types of tooth pain especially if there is any swelling involved. Four 200mg Ibuprofen works for me!

Thanks for the help! I got to the dentist today- so hopefully this won't recur.
But while I'm here I'd like to ask another question: For other acute pain that the normal dosing doesn't seem to handle- any ideas? When I get the IV shot (Dilaudid 4mg) it always helps, whereas the oral meds can be hit or miss. Is there a way to use my meds occasionally so they are "stronger" in order to limit my dr visits for shots?

Agree with both sekio and Captain Heroin.

Opiates aren't great for some specific types of pain and you'll most probably find more relief in local anaesthetics such as benzo/lido-caine.

Is there a way to use my meds occasionally so they are "stronger" in order to limit my dr visits for shots?
Not entirely sure I know what you mean, plugging them may an alternative and possibly more effective route to oral ingestion.

Well I saw some stuff on here before I was a member- people were talking mostly about Opana I think. There was stuff about taking meds with caffeine, juice. diphenhydramine, or alcohol. Plugging, parachuting, and insufflation were also mentioned in some places. I can't find any threads that specifically mention Dilaudid, and I don't have the first clue about any of that stuff (how much, what not to mix, efficacy, etc). I always just took more pills- or went to get a shot.
I'm less looking to "get high" than to cut out pain. If that matters.

I don't know. I don't know what any of these terms mean or anything about any of it. It's part of my question.

Grapefruit juice, orange juice, apples, acidic fruits increase the drugs toxicity in your blood stream. Especially painkillers and blood pressure medications.
