I started this thread to see if anyone had ever had or heard of a similar experience. So basically a friend of a friend who well call john was hanging at a buddys house around 3 weeks ago when he stumbled across his buddys bottle of liquid roxicett in his basement. John had never used opiates besides drinking a bottle of coedine months before. John drank 35 ml (equal to 35 mg of oxycodone) of the liquid in around an hour and a half and had no ill effects whatsoever. The next morning when he woke up he was unable to blink his left eye, move his eyebbrow or forehead, or use the left side of his mouth. After 3 days of worsening symptoms including headaches, toothaches and blurred vision John went to the hospital and was diagnosed with bells palsy caused by mild lyme disease. He was put on doxycycline and prednisone for 3 weeks and has stopped taking them after 2 weeks since his symptoms are nearly gone. Johns friend who he drank the roxicett with had 25 ml and felt nauseaus but had no symptoms the next day. Is it possible the percs could have triggered Johns lyme symptoms?

I don't know but 35 or 25mg for first time is way too much for someone who may be sensitive to the histamine release of opioids. The first time I tried oxy I used about 20mg of oxy (the equivalent anyway, there was hydrocodone involved) with some xanax like an idiot.

I didn't throw up because I nodded off so fast, but I felt sicker than sick.

I know it was too much, i nodded out within a half hour of taking the last 5ml. I figured i wouldve found some link between opiates and lyme disease/Bells palsy onset by now but theres nothing online.

Lyme disease is caused by bacteria, unless someone has tainted your oxycodone with Borrelia sp., I doubt you actually got lyme disease.

He could have had a stroke, this is the most likely assuming this is all related to the oxycodone.

Is it possible he just contracted lyme disease from an actual tic, and its all just a big coincidence? If not, I suspect your friend had some sort of stroke.

It was probably just a coincidence considering he had other lyme disease symptoms (Headaches,Toothaches, fatigue, etc). The timing of the onset just made me curious.

That was never my concern i wanted to know if there was a connection between naive opiate use and the onset of pre existing lyme which i have reiterated several times ......

Just a coincidence. Guy had Lyme's Disease, guy got high, guy developed Lyme's symptoms.

Remove the middle bit and nothing changes. You could also add guy brushed teeth, guy ate hamburger, guy masturbated in there but the first and the last bit are what matters.

It's unlikely that opioids would suddenly allow the bacteria to cause symptoms.

Although granted, opioids do weaken the immune system's resistance do they not?

I think generally bacteria first multiply, while signaling each other with chemical messengers and then switch to some virulent mode once their numbers reach a critical point and the chemical messengers reach a critical concentration.... so that would be the main trigger.
But, seems conceivable a weakened immune system would allow for faster multiplication? IDK am not even remotely an immunologist.

The timing of the Bell's palsy still seems mostly coincidence though like hammilton said. Apart from some *possible* slight contribution it is *probable* it would have all still happened anyway sooner or later.

A friend of mine had Bell's palsy, it took months to fully heal but fortunately at least it did fully heal. Big scare of course. The dude has addiction issues though so who knows what role it all plays in contractability. Probably doesn't help. :)

It sounds like Bells Palsy which has been known to be triggered from Lyme's Disease, although the true cause of Bells Palsy is unfortunately unknown and diagnosed based on clinical presentation. I'm assuming your friend has already been diagnosed with Lyme's since you used the words tiggered this disease and symptoms wouldn't appear that quickly from an initial bite. They put your friend on an antibiotic vs. an anti viral which leads me to believe they may have thought it was triggered by an existing Lymes dx. Usually an antiviral such as acyclovir is prescribed for Bells Palsy because its often correlated with a viral infection like herpes. Your friend might have benefited more if he completed the full dose of antibiotics. We generally need to complete a full dose because symptoms often disappear long before the bacteria is completely gone. Then it comes back! Steroids should be tapered ... They impact sugar/cortisol in the body. Hope that helps at least a little? :) Hope he does well with the steroids to reduce the symptoms!!
