What Are You Listening To? v. Music to my ears (NO EMBEDS)

These link's are this evening's homework for me. :)
Hope you like em - to me they are all classic bands; not just parochial local shit, but stuff that is the real fuckin' deal. The fact that most of the guys in these bands grew up in my horrid hometown is sort of a coincidence, but as they've become friends and to some extent collaborators, is sort of surreal, as they are all cult legends (in specific circles, mainly in parts of continental Europe - especially Spain, where a lot of Australian bands are more known/revered than they are at home).

One more - this is another obscure Australian classic; but from the 1960s, and from Melbourne. These guys were all class.

The Loved Ones - Sad Dark Eyes

Sam - you're in Manchester, is that right?
This music I'm posting (bands that originated or grew up where i did; perth) may not hold a candle to that city's (punk/post punk) musical heritage....but the climate/atmosphere is well reflected in both, I'd say.
And many of the bands' all-too-familiar drugs of choice (alcohol and/or smack, in many cases. And the themes of isolation boredom ( bore-dum...)
Regardless, a little taste of criminally overlooked Australian gritty rock'n'roll for yer midweek blues.

A lot of great musicians who are neglected elsewhere are popular in mainland Europe - Spain especially, it seems. Portugal too. I can mention Felt to a Spanish kid in their twenties and they'll be fully aware of them. I can do the same here and (unless they're a hipster who's probably just heard 'em on last fm anyway) I'll just get a blank look.

Yeah, I'm in Manchester. I think our punk / post-punk scene gets over-mythologised a bit because of Ian Curtis' death (although there was loads of great stuff), but I know exactly what you mean about music reflecting climate / atmosphere.

Awful isn't it. thought it may have come in useful for Spliff though

Only R. Kelly that's worth a wank (*checks id card to make sure*) is that "urban soul opera" thing he did about shagging dwarfs in cupboards or whatever it was. That was fukkin nuts. Also fukkin dire (and deeply, deeply creepy) but so far from any semblance of sanity it's worth it just for that :D

Ochre - Beneath Fleeting Visions

That's interesting - and sad.
Having said that....the Buzzcocks, the Fall...there sure were some great bands - and of course Tony Wilson/factory records/the Hacienda - they're legendary - but you'd be much more informed of their lasting impact (if their is much to speak of?).

Perth Western Australia loves to bulldoze, gentrify and ignore its cultural heritage (a la the hacienda site being an apartment building nowadays, right?) and shit DJs and pubs without live music are the ticket with most fucking punters around here (despite our healthy live music community - not enough venues).
Shaun Ryder lived here for a whole post-Mondays, I'm told. Now there's a claim to fame!

To all those property developed cunts:

The Beasts of Bourbon - Thanks

Haha a song about fucking dwarfs in cupboards, might have to look that up. Liking that 2nd tune, not too sure on the first

Timewrap - Smoke Miash

It's weird - there was when I was growing up, and it seemed to culminate around the time that film about Curtis was made - Control, that was it. I spent most of my late teens locked away listening to Joy Division and The Smiths.

Then there seemed to be a backlash, coinciding with Peter Hook opening his Factory-themed bar. The crux of the protest being that Manchester was milking its legacy and the music scene should move on. Which, to an extent, I agree with. Only in many cases there's a good reason for the scene not having moved on - most of the current bands are shit. :D

There's some good bands around here now though, some of which actually feature people from Manchester, rather than southern students. Which makes me happy.

Manchester does much the same. The 'Northern Quarter' used to be an exciting (and potentially dangerous) place, but it became hip to the point where 'street food' establishments now outnumber the 'vintage' boutiques.

A gig venue / cafe bar on the outskirts of the centre of town has decided to become a restaurant. Same ownership and everything. It just sucks.

I hear ya. The business owners in such cases are cunts - but punters staying home with all the amusements of home (gaming, net, home cinema shit etc etc sort of twists their arms.
Restrictive noise legislation and liquor licensing is another part of it, but it is still fucking depressing.

When they turned our favourite local music dive bar into a posh "sports bar" for oafish rich cunts, my drummer followed through with her promise to avenge the music scene by doing an "Upper Decker"* in the ladies' toilets. She's a star!

Lubricated Goat - In the Raw

* "upper decker" - taking a shit into the toilet cistern.

Aerosmith
Box Of Fire
Rats In The Cellar
Goin' under, rats in the cellar
Goin' under, skin's turnin' yellow
Nose is runny, losin' my connection
Losin' money, getting no affection

New york city blues
East side, west side lose
Throw me in the slam
Catch me if you can
Believe
That you're wearing
Tearing me apart

Safe complaining, 'casue everything's rotten
Go insanin', and ain't a thing forgotten
Feelin' cozy, rats in the cellar
Cheeks are rosy, skin's turning yellow
Lose it's party, lookin' rather lazy
See my body, pushin up a-daisies

New york city blues
East side, west side lose
Throw me in the slam
Catch me if you can
Believe
That you're wearing
Tearing me apart

and if aerosmith don't put a spring in your step you must be dead inside

Cheers you. im in the mood for the whole album this morning. I deleted an email from him totally by mistake yesterday. T'had a one off pic attachment he'd made me, after a forum discussion on dick-sizing about barrel syringe sizes and podgering. twas an ace pic

"Knockscock". He bought the domain name for it as a joke after the whole discission.

One part of the pic had a 60ml barrel on it anyway. But thats all Im saying :o

Meh, tears before 12 ...not bad ones, just sad ones.
