Hi,

I have used nicergoline before and it helped my headaches ( as its noted to do in the literature). I was about to start up again but saw this press release urging clinicians to cease its use due to risk of fibrosis. see

I was wondering if there is anything that works in a similar nature to reduce headaches , but is non ergot derived?

Thanks for any response!

Have you discussed your concern about the medication with your doctor? Your risk might be more or less than the general population, so I would have a discussion with him before you decide to switch medicines.

Maybe take a look at this page before you talk to him: http://www.webmd.com/migraines-headaches/guide/migraine-treatments

There are lots of different treatment options, unfortunately the ergots have always been the most effective for the people I know with migraines. You might find that nothing else works quite as well for you, so you'll need to work with your doctor to balance the potential long term risks with your present quality of life. Anecdotally serotonergic psychedelics greatly reduce the frequency of migraines, but that's not really a viable option for most people.

Can I ask how frequently you used your medication when you were taking it previously?

Thanks.. I haven't discussed with a doctor yet as we don't have this med here in Aus... I ordered it from Asia (its legal to import though).

I was taking 15mg a day.

As for the link, I appreciate it, Ive tried most of those things, with the only thing helping being topamax, but had other side effects.

Thats why I am seeking something similar in action to nicergoline but without the potential severe risks.

Cheers

Egotamines do help alot of people when nothing else does. They took Sansert off the market here in Canada which is Methysergide a drug long known for the rare but fatal side effect Fibrosis. If you have taken the drug your taking now in the past with no problems it may be worth taking it or another ergotamine that works for you if that means getting rid of migraines for you. You would just have to visit your doctor alot to make sure your not developing any of these side effects.
