RIP Rik Mayall

I remember seeing some footage of Bad News playing at Monsters of Rock at Castle Donnington and people in the crowd were throwing bottles of piss at them. They were loving it on stage, great laugh

Aye, that's from More Bad News I think. I watched them both just the other week. Downloaded a load of The Comic Strip Presents... and The Young Ones as well.

Sad news.

"Neil, the bathroom's free. Unlike the country under the Thatcherite junta"

Gutted , what a very funny dude , I grew up on comic strips, and young ones.

Felt like a personal friend had died when I heard the news earlier. Really sad :(

Aside from TYO's, Bottom etc which I always loved the memory that sticks out about Rik was him reading Roald Dahl stories, the way he read those books was simply perfect, the contorting of his face and hand gestures.... genius

Rip <3

Echoing everyones thoughts on here :-(
Literally brought up on young ones and bottom haha! I feel them programmes and riks character helped me form alot of me as a character (in terms of sarcasm, humour)

Rik Mayall, who starred in the cult ’80s TV show ‘The Young Ones,’ has died. The actor and comedian was 56 years old.
Even though ‘The Young Ones’ was a British sitcom that ran for only two years, it was a huge hit on the fledgling MTV network back in the day. Many music fans were exposed to the show, and to Mayall’s popular character, through late-night showings of the program.
‘The Young Ones’ centered on four roommates, including a punk, a hippie and a pretentious poetry-writing anarchist played by Mayall. The show was known for its music in-jokes and surrealist humor, which combined both Monty Python-style bits of comedy and punk-rock attitude.
The BBC reports that Mayall’s manager confirmed the actor’s death. No cause was given, but Mayall spent several days in a coma in 1998 after a bike accident.
After ‘The Young Ones,’ Mayall starred in another hit British series, ‘Bottom.’ He also had roles in the movies ‘An American Werewolf in London’ and ‘Drop Dead Fred.’ His most recent appearance was in a recurring role on the TV show ‘Man Down’ last year.
Here’s one of our favorite ‘Young Ones’ clips, featuring Monty Python’s Terry Jones and Mayall quoting a David Bowie song at a funeral:

Sad about Rik dying, I did like him in "Bad News" and "Mr Jolly lives next door" but I was never convinced by "alternative" comedy (the alternative to being funny...).

Any one told a stiffy joke yet?

My mum will be please. My brother, sister and I would annoy the fuck out of her by constantly quoting the Young Ones.

RIP P Rik

I always fucking hated the young ones. And then he did the same stuff for the next god knows how many decades culminating in "Drop dead fred".

The People's Poet is dead!

Shattered. This is (more) really sad news.

He might have been "England's biggest bottom-burp"...but he was a wonderful and innovative entertainer. Very sorry to hear this. Rik will be greatly missed.
