Celeb comparing press coverage of her life to rape

She's right. Spot on. Rape is not simply the physical act of having a cock shoved into you against your will. Rape is a state of mind. A state of mind forced upon you against your will. She is spot on. I don't do sleb bullshit but she is dead right - rape is the only word that fits.

It's a metaphor, innit? Having no privacy, having photographers trying to snap your bits, etc. Must feel very invasive.

Invasion of privacy. That's the very definition of rape. At least it is taken to an extreme which is presumably the case with "stars". Such folk do walk a knife-edge. I have sympathy on both sides. They court it cos it is their living wage, they loathe it cos it is as intrusive as any rape could ever be. On some levels. I doubt she meant physical rape as that is a rather specific claim not supported by her evidence - nor any other. But rape is a broader term by any realistic definition of the word.

"Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms sexual penetration initiated against one or more individuals without the consent of those individuals. The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority or against a person who is incapable of valid consent, such as one who is unconscious, incapacitated, or below the legal age of consent.[1][2][3][4] The term rape is sometimes used interchangeably with the term sexual assault.[5]"

"Definitions
Main article: Types of rape
See also: Rape by gender
There are several types of rape, generally categorized by reference to the situation in which it occurs, the sex or characteristics of the victim, and/or the sex or characteristics of the perpetrator. Different types of rape include date rape, gang rape, marital rape, incestual rape, child sexual abuse, prison rape, acquaintance rape, war rape and statutory rape.[24]"

Boo hoo rich celeb who gets paparazzi popping pics of her.... what a rapey poor old life that must be.... she should tell that shit to people who are fucked up from being raped

Violated yes... intrusive

Maybe rape was a poor choice of word, but surely you can understand the metaphorical hyperbole.

I know I'd start to get driven a bit mad if I was getting absolutely no privacy with people following me every day of my life taking pictures and trying to find my dirty secrets or slip ups so they'd have something to talk about.

I think she was definitely wrong to actually use the word raped in that context, even as a metaphor. Too fucked to type a proper reply atm but rape is much more serious than just having fucking pictures taken of you, yeah I understand that she feels violated but really, it's no way comparable to how you would feel if you actually were raped. Also it's the life she's chosen, if she didn't want everything that comes with being a celeb then she should have worked at McDonalds or something :P

First person to resort to dictionary definition makes the underlying point that few understand the meaning of words. Words mean more than written and codified definitions. If you can't see that you never did get raped.

I'm afraid that's what you sign up for nowadays when you decide to become famous. I'm not saying that's a good thing, but that's how it is.
All she had to do to avoid this "rape" was to marry a plumber, have kids, a mortgage on a modest house in the suburbs, pile on a few pounds and get a part-time job as a secretary or shop assistant or call-centre operator somewhere. And forget about making movies, fame, money, designer dresses, personal stylist, expensive beauty treatments, the Oscars, being on the A-List everywhere, etc. etc. etc. A case of be careful what you wish for, possibly, but certainly not rape. She has achieved exactly what she has worked hard for.

Pretty old idea tho - Lennon and Yoko made a film in 1970 where a guy follows a woman taking photos of her until she's upset. The title of the film was "Rape".

Kurt Cobain's "Rape me" too.

I don't suppose Charlie is quite as talented as either of those tho.

I'm sure such a comment would not have raised any eyebrows just a bit ago. It's a tried and tested analogy that has been used for ages. The fact that this celebrity statement has been picked up on just mirrors the zeitgeist, i.e. the collective anxiety about what constitutes rape.

Since the Lady Diana thing, and especially since princes Harry and William and poticians children are generally given press privacy (at least whilst they are in their childhood), after that im afraid being a celebrity comes with the package. You wana be a celebrity, and if you happen to be good looking, or doing something out of the ordinary then god help you.

I think Jeremy Clarkson assaulted Pierece Morgan in a resteraunt for the constant press hassle he was being given by Morgan, and Hugh Grant chucked a can of baked beans at the paparazi who wouldnt leave him alone after he went with that rough old prozzie in the nineties/noughties? . Why I'll never understand, considering the beatiful wife he was married to, and he could probably have had chatted up almost any single american girl that he fancied. Perhaps just uncomplicated sex is all he needed, it seemed to help his career in the long run, after the initial embarassment and talking about it on tv all is forgiven and he now regularly plays lousy, cheating, lying characters. Charlize Theron must be innundated by the press, i can understand the way she feels.

I suppose all that poor woman down the road from me needed to do to avoid her (actual) rape was to stay indoors and dress like a nun then, eh? :\

What if she (Charlize Theron) really wanted to act, and this level of fame is merely a byproduct of her success in that field? It's pretty ignorant (not to mention dangerous) to assume that anybody who succeeds in the entertainment industry deserves to forfeit their private life, isn't it?

It's the fault of the culture we live in, not the individual celebrities.

I don't think every "celebrity" chooses to be famous.
Fame can come from all sorts of life choices, and sometimes it is a result of a random event - or series of events.
I know lots of people that are creative and do things that could lead to fame (like play music, act, write, perform [which I do, simply because I enjoy it], make films, paint, work as designers and so on)
I don't think the goal, ultimately, for any of them is a desire to be "celebrities". It sounds nightmarish to me - I like to do scandalous things with (virtual) impunity!

Being recognised for their work - sure. But be the focus of the tabloid press, and all kinds of gossip and whatever other things go along with that level of fame? Certainly not.
I understand what you're saying, Dan - and I loathe 'celebrity culture' - but those magazines and tabloids that buy invasive paparazzi photos just seem like they celebrate stalking and voyeuristic humiliation...

I like Ismene's examples of Yoko Ono's film, and Kurt Cobain's song.
Dylan's revulsion at the press in the lead up to his 1966 "motorcycle accident" is pretty interesting as well - like rape, being hounded by the more predatory - or vapid - elements of the media can destroy people. Some can handle or enjoy the attention - but many do not.

I haven't read the article but look at how Princess Diana was treated. Disgusting.
I actually met her when I was 7 doing some gymnastics for school. Nonetheless, that's slightly off-topic.
Shambles has a very valid point here. Rape is a state of mind and if these people are taking pictures of her against her will, 'tis an invasion of privacy.
Yes these people choose to be famous but nobody deserves to have their privacy invaded. - what had she actually done to deserve it? Wanted to become famous? That's not a good or logical argument if anyone came up with up.
Yes rape is a sexual act but I agree with shambles in that it can also be a state of mine.

Interesting discussion. Is interesting to see the different reactions to this, different viewpoints and reasoning and justification for those viewpoints.

I'm too fucked to argue this properly again, maybe I should make more of an effort when I'm actually sober but hey. Still think rape is strictly more serious than a state of mind, at the end of the day having your privacy invaded won't last forever and you'll be able to pretty much forget about it and be alright again whereas with actual rape I don't think that's the case at all. If someone had actually been raped then they wouldn't use that word to describe it, yeah ok it's bad but it's not the same thing you know? Lots of people use the word rape without considering how seriously actual rape really affects the people it's happened to and those around them.

I don't think Charlize Theron was making light of rape, or saying that being harassed by the tabloids is the same thing. It's a well used analogy and the NY Daily News have slaughtered her for it because she's essentially having a go at them.
