Has anyone ever been to Passages Malibu in California?

The celebs that have gone there haven't done quite well post treatment if I recall correctly. Other then that I have no idea. I personally find it hard to believe that someone can be "cured" in 30 days. If I were you, I would instead look for a high quality traditional treatment center.

I've seen their advertisements, even though they are a non 12-step program, what makes them so special? I can only imagine what you would pay out of pocket. What alarms me is when the guy says "I was an addict for ten years, now I'm not!" It's not that simple. I was an addict too and though I'm no longer using I will always be an addict. Research any rehab before you decide to sign up.

I've heard that they are just very expensive rehab mills that celebrities and rich people go to, and that they charge a lot, and it's a joke rehab/treatment place like Betty Ford.

They had to change the wording in their commercials where they said "This works" since their failure rate is very high.

An acquaintance of mine finds the things Pax says "I was an addict for 10 years, now I'm not!" BS to be a joke since nobody at Passages wants to take responsibility and say, "Yes I am addicted or am an addict; but I had to change my life and get sober."

Why is betty ford considered a joke.. I thought it was ranked as one of the top twelve step rehabs on the west cost?

I know people who went there and this is what they told me about it: it's a highly expensive private rehab/treatment center that is basically a joke, they do not have excellent medical care for people detoxing/withdrawing from alcohol, opiates, or benzos, there were celebrities there but it's a place where people with lots of money go to, and they said that many people there discreetly used drugs or drank even though it's a drug/alcohol rehab, and they were not told to leave or kicked out. The people I know who went to Betty Ford also said how the staff including counselors, etc. do not care about actually helping people get sober or stay sober but instead want people to pay a lot of money and get admitted into Betty Ford.

sounds like a typical rehab to me=D

Are most really like that? I have never been to one since I was not physically addicted to alcohol or other drugs. People just told me to go to AA or NA meetings instead-which I didn't do, and at the time I was ashamed of being an alcoholic and having substance abuse/addiction issues so I did not want to go to some place and have my family find out even though they knew all along, and now support me in my sobriety.

Had I gone into a rehab/detox place I would have gone into the free state run ones, and I have heard with those they put you into a mental hospital. Or I would have been since I was in a rural area at the time since I could not have afforded anything else.

Hardly anybody wants to acknowledge that they are an addict/alcoholic, especially at first. In my opinion, Passages preys upon this. For me, the moment I think I am "cured" or no longer an addict I tell myself "GREAT! Lets go use then! Its cool" or "well lets just go grab a beer today, just one". My problem is I can often keep it to one for a little bit, but pretty quickly its back on full blown.

Frankly, that type of thinking kills people.

I am so grateful for my treatment center, I did not stay sober consecutively, but it taught me how to get clean and stay clean. That has always stuck with me and I am very firmly back into a pattern I had when I was clean and serene :D

Frankly, people are often shocked at how early I am in recovery. I have to admit that I feel the same at 2+ weeks then I did at say 2-3 months. It am just more confident. This time I am not spending half of my day trying to figure out if I am "really an addict". I know I am and that is okay.

shit, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. Society tends to have little respect for addicts/alcoholics... however, society has tremendous respect for the recovered and that is awesome.
