Can Oxycontin/Oxycodone cause heart problems?

Hi people, I am currently taking 320mgs Oxycontin OP (1-80mgs 4X's day) and 120mgs oxycodone IR (2-20mgs IR 3X's day) for C5, C6 and C7 vertebra fractures and they are currently fused together, I did not opt for surgery because the doctors gave me a 50/50 chance of resulting in a quadriplegic condition after surgery and I said "FUCK THAT" I am walking now and those numbers are so ridiculous to even consider thinking about surgery!

Umm....I would think the poor circulation is due to you sitting in bed for 22 hours a day?

Do the fractures cause you any mental stress? Your mind & body can only take so much stress.

As for the pills.......I haven't read anywhere that taking pain meds for a substantial amount of years can cause someone to have heart problems. Then again, I haven't done much research on it so maybe someone more knowledgeable will come along & give you the correct answer.

How long have you been laying in your bed for 22 hours? That can't be good on the muscles & your heart is a muscle.

As TheLostBoys says.

It's more likely that you don't/can't exercise much and your cardiac system isn't in great shape. I know if I sat in bed for 22hours a day, my condition of my heart would be pretty shoddy too.

I don't know about Oxycodone in particular... there's a lot of evidence emerging lately that suggests Methadone is causing cardiac issues. Though somewhat similar, Methadone and Oxycodone are actually quite different in nature.

I'd put this down to lifestyle and fitness or lack thereof.

I have a heart murmur and years of oxycodone use didn't affect it. There's no way for us to know if the meds are exacerbating your heart trouble though. You didn't say if this condition with your heart has been recently discovered or how long you have been suffering. At the very least, your health is compromised with the slightest exertion causing breathing problems. That being said, you really need to address this issue with a cardiologist.

I starting at 10mgs lortabs 3Xday to current dosage in a matter of 12 yrs since 2002. I am probably in bed 22hrs a day and good days only about 19 hrs. I was told that the back of my heart has bad circulation which cause me to loose my breath by just loading a suitcase into the car or just climbing up a ladder to the height of about 10ft then back down. It is so bad that I have had 911 stand by on the phone until my breath caught up with normal breathing before hanging up or requesting medics. Can Oxycodone/opiates cause heart circulation problems after 12 yrs or less of use?

Yes, it can cause respiratory depression if use is not careful. This is multiplied with the intake of alcohol.

All opiates can cause respiratory depression if you over do it, especially adding alcohol or a benzo but I believe the OP was asking if the drug itself can cause heart problems, whether short or longer terms, depending on how long his use.

In assuming he's been taking oxy for his fractures & alcohol isn't present, at least I hope not.

OP, like mentioned by someone else, you may have to see a cardiologist..........

hi lostboys, mental stress yes as in depression. I have been laying in bed for about 7 yrs, I know it is bad but the pain is awful. I did for 2 day in a row walk with my buddy 4 hrs a day and the third day my calfs hurt so bad that I was walking like a robot. I could not bend my knees, this lasted for about 5 days until the tightness stopped and I could walk normal. This told me how bad the condition of my legs are.

He didn't mention alcohol though.

thank you guys for posting. The heart condition is a recent discovery, I do not drink any alcohol. I have recently been smoking a small amount of marijuana and it does help me to get up and do simple things. It also slightly helps with some body aches and depression. My definition of small amount is less than a joint a month. A toke or two will be all I need.

I have not taken my blood pressure meds or my cholesterol meds since they were prescribed to me 2 yrs ago because of denial "stupid I know". I have been taken both for the last two months and my breathing has improved a great bit.

Yes, depression sets in after you've been laying in a bed for a long time w/o getting out much.

So are you saying that you got your movement back in your legs after 5 days of getting out & walking? If so, that's good........

I sat in my bed once for a constant 2 weeks & I thought I was gonna go mad, although I had a TV in the room, it still gets to you. My muscles also tightened up & once I got to stretching out & walking, it felt so good physically & mentally.

It really does surprise me how much of a difference it makes mentally just walking like a 5 block radius. I feel invigorated......

Oh man, don't stop taking your cholesterol or heart meds......they are more important than your pain meds.

I knew a guy that had high blood pressure & cholesterol & he never took his meds figuring he would eat healthy, go to the gym, etc.....well, he died at 52 years old from a massive heart attack.

Those meds are a must for you to continue living a normal life.

yes, after 5 days movement was normal but it really showed me that my body was in bad shape. Thank you for your posts, I keep track of my meds with the calendar now.
