Opioids Tramadol seizure/ reducing risk

Hey guys, last summer I tried tramadol a couple of times and loved it, until one day I did 300mg (or 350mg) I cant exactly remember and had a seizure in front of my whole family.

I did 50mg around two months ago and I was fine, but now I am always paranoid about having another seizure and that is the scariest thought. Also I cant just do 50mg, realistically id properly wanna increase my dose, and im scared that I may go over the seizure threshold limit.

My question is, can taking etizolam or diazapam or xanax or any other benzo prevent tramadol seizures? if not, is there anything else thats like tramadol that doesnt risk such a hellish side effect, oxycodone is so damn expensive, methadone and subutex are boring as hell now.. hmm :?

Be careful taking tramadol if you've already had a seizure. As far as your question goes, diazepam and Xanax/alprazolam can reduce the risk. Etizolam probably does too but I don't know how much of a track record it has as an anticonvulsant compared to the classic benzos. I'd stick with diazepam (it is used medically to treat seizures).

We can't give you recommendations on drugs. Tramadol is a pretty unique one too.

If you never go anywhere near the dosage on which you had a seizure, you might be okay. You can also concurrently dose with medications that raise the seizure threshold. However, the dose of tramadol you found to be problematic wasn't even all that high. I'd just use a different drug.

Long Story
The maximum recommended dose of Tramadol before the inducement of seizures is 400mg every 24 hours. This is set on a number of factors, so at 350mg, I'm not really surprised that it's happened to you. Certainly not common. Nevertheless, it is certainly not uncommon, nor is it unforeseen.

As NeighborhoodThreat says, Tramadol is pretty unique and I can relate to why you may think it doesn't compare to other opioids/opiates in that they don't give you a rush. I've never IV'd, but I've never had an opioid/opiate rush as good as Tramadol. Unlike other opioids/opiates, Tramadol also acts as a SSRI (Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor - similar to medications that help relieve depression such as Prozac), and as such it floods your brain with Serotonin, which can give you quite a rush. Some people love it, and some people think it's awful.

Using Benzodiazepines to increase the seizure threshold, to allow you to take more Tramadol, is a possibility. Whilst all* Benzodiazepines will raise the threshold, there are some in particular that are both licensed and marketed at being anti-convulsants, rather than strictly anxiolytics, or hypnotics.

As per the Ashton Manual you'll see that the market aim for Clobazem (Frisium) and Clonazepam (Klonopin/Rivotril) is anti-convulsants, that should prove more effective than a hypnotic such as Temazepam (Restoril) or an anxiolytic such as Diazepam (Valium).

As for how many mg's of what particular Benzos you need to be able to increase the seizure threshold for how many mg's of Tramadol you can take is out of my comfort area and I'll tell you now, that anyone who thinks they can tell you accurately, is a fool.

Short Story
Yeah, taking Benzo's before you take Tramadol should increase your seizure threshold. However, the quantity of benzos that you need to take to determine the quantity of Tramadol you can take will be guesswork at best.

My Advice
Just don't do it... seizures are nasty, nasty things and can cause a lot of damage.

That said, I know what Blue Lighters are like... you're obviously going to give it a go anyway so please try and use Clonazepam (Klonopin) over something like Temazepam or Zopiclone as it'll be much more effective. Though I envisage you'll use Xanax or Diazepam as they're easier to obtain. Use the aforementioned Ashton Manual for dosage comparisons.

* I'm fairly certain of this, and also think that Z drugs similar to Benzodiazepines such as Zopiclone (Zimovane) and Zolpidem (Ambien) have been proven to raise the threshold too. However, please correct me with a source if this is not true.

Your choosing the LEAST recreational opiate to try and get a high off of. I would strongly recommend trying another opiate if your looking for a high..

Least recreational in what sense? I think that's a very subjective choice.

I think there's a good case for Tramadol being more recreational than Codeine, or even Dihydrocodeine.

If you were to offer me 400mg of Tramadol, Codeine or DHC, I'd take the Tramadol.

Less recreational in the sense that it can make you have a seizure... Plus the fact that the high leaves a lot to be desired for most people (responses vary much more widely than with most opiates).

If you offered me those 3 I'd smoke a joint. Or either of the ones that aren't tramadol.
