It's not an urban myth as such, the law exists. We're talking about legal precedence here. We get told lots of fun facts & amusing case law as 1st year law students as ice-breakers.

Technically, it's legal but in practice that precedence would be overruled in a court, at which time it would no longer be legal & you would indeed be charged with murder.

The legislators are just too lazy to go around repealing all these ancient laws & it's not as if anyone has tried to rely on that defence, so it'll be around for a fair while I'm sure!
