Yeah, and it's exactly this sort of ignorance that needs to be cut out from society. If someone is using a word like nigger without knowing it's etymology then they clearly need to be called out on it so they can make a decision as to whether they want to continue using it.

Thought I was on ignore anyway, or was that just another flash in the pan tantrum directed at someone trying to help you stop feeling so shitty?

In that case the context has changed.

If I call someone a cunt in an all out argument, it should be obvious I'm using the word as a perjorative term.

If I call my gf a cunt (as I often do) while joking around it should be obvious the word is being used in a different context.

Context is all.

Ignorance is no defence in the law. And you'd have to be fucking ignorant to not know where nigger comes from.

I was once extensively slagged off for a week on a retreat by an artist from Birmingham (Bournville to be precise) whose parents emigrated from India (mine having emigrated from Ireland) who called me a "jock" n' what not and imitated my accent at every occasion to sound like Rab C :D. She delighted in greeting me with "ock eye the noo". No malice was intended, just ignorance on her part.

I didn't offer a Glasgow kiss - promise. But did point out the double standard. Not acceptable. Ever.

Aye it was hilarious, but after a week and on every, and I mean every occasion we met and this was in a group situation she did it. It wore thin and got old.

I do admit, and hope I don't offend anyone with this, that because most here are British I actually forget that people come here from other parts of Europe - even though it is called EADD.

I'm not personally offended at all Evey, just pointing out this kind of attitude seems to be getting more frequent and we've got all kind of ethnicities around here, apart from the Africans who get driven away after asking a question by the influx of Egyptian-themed puns that follow.

And yeah white trash and nigger don't offset each other at all. White trash as I said is more classist, whereas nigger has a nasty background that I don't think will be fully stomped out for a while. Cracka can't really be compared either, one posited original meaning is that it's from the crack of the whip of slave-masters, or refers to poor white folk who'd crack whips on cattle. Both perjorative but I'd argue nigger is worse. All racism is shit but the power and the way the word originated mean a lot.

I hate typing that word so much. It's true words change over time (look at gay), that you can reclaim words or make fun of yourself, but nigger (last time) is one of those that has such a strong history it really is a hateful word, regardless of intent almost. Like, if I said 'oh a bunch of niggers (I lied) moved in next door, they're really nice', I'm still being offensive. You don't get that with many other words.

Edit: I am slow at posting. What Allein said about reclaimed words; I've been in a pub where I was possibly one of like three white people, and the place was packed. A lot of the black dudes came back after and when they left I got the fist pump and 'later nigga' but would I fuck say the same back to them.

In the initial social situation I experienced, it was funny. Everyone laughed. I like a bit of banter and slagging but wasn't aware or experienced in how I was going to feel about it after a week of it non stop.

Ever experienced it first hand?

I'm trying to get you to see that in certain circumstances and in the right context that kind of jibing can be acceptable.

Course I have, haven't most people?
