Right dude I appreciate your logical input on the theory. But here I'll suggest a different hypothesis. Could you exclude the possibility of MDMA being a once natural reoccurring substance? I haven't found evidence saying it was, but you can't exclude the possibility. The focal point of this theory is to find out. If you study the mythology and philosophy of this mystical substance often referred to the elixir of life it was mentioned once being a natural reoccurring substance until it disappeared. Over the years a lot of alchemy was directed in attempting re-creating such.
The elixir was to prolong life, not see god. Becoming an immortal, like a greek god would be the closer stretch I could see. The philosphers stone was to transmute metals, which was the other goal, which some thought to be one and the same with the elixir, turning blood into gold (Which I'm sure would have been to no avail). But alchemy itself would be a more appropriate search for god than the elixir of life.
MDMA is a complex molecule as well, and the way it's created is not easily replicated in plants or animals, even if far more complex ones are. I doubt it would have been created somewhere easily accessible to man, as of yet we've not found a naturally occurring source; I would imagine things are examined quite thoroughly for potential disease treatment and other pharmacological needs.
Even had it been, I feel as though things like the Soma, and ritualistic psychedelic use would have out shined such an extremely rare chemical. MDMA is an empathogen, but certainly is no entheogen.
MDMA is psychoactive, true, but this includes anything that affects the central nervous system, which includes all manner of drug, including the most widespread ones, such as nicotine, alcohol & opium. It would also make the above, cannabis, and all the other psychedelic plants eligible for the title.
