the person above you will give you a random number. starting at the top of your computer library or folder, or at the top left corner of your cd shelf, count down the number of cds you're given and tell us which cd is in that position and something about it.

i'm first so i'll use a random number generator to select...

number 34.

the magic numbers - the magic numbers

saw them at coachella that year and loved the upbeat, poppy loveliness of their sound.

next up: number 23

Interesting thread.

I came up with:

Dropkick Murphys - Sing Loud, Sing Proud

tqk4tGf.jpg

I first heard their song 'The Gauntlet' on a free CD with Kerrang called 'Noise Annoys' in my early teens (2001 so I'd have been 14) and really loved it. I never got into the band properly until a few years ago though, and am gutted I missed them play earlier this year. Housemate and I made drunken plans to go and never followed through with them. Could have seen them in 2001 but I was about 13 or 14 then and wouldn't have appreciated it like I would now. Still fairly emo back then. Still holding out hope they'll tour the UK properly, they're one of my favourite bands. This is still easily my favourite album, pretty much an entire album of Celtic punk anthems re: the unions, booze, fighting, etc.
They've got a fairly large backlog of great albums along with a few dual EPs with bands like The Business and another I can't remember :D

Now serving ticket number 17

I do buy and listen to CDs, but I'm away from my collection just now, so I had to do it digitally. Meaning I haven't really got access to everything I own (just what I can be bothered uploading), so it isn't as 'random' and results are slightly skewed. So I don't have to share dirty secrets like Primal Scream records. :D

Number 57 was actually Greed by Swans, but everybody who'd be bothered to read this post knows I adore Swans. So I took the liberty of skipping to number 58, which happened to be:

groupsex.jpg

What can I say? Just under fifteen-and-a-half minutes of frantic hardcore, but fun-loving hardcore. And pretty clever with it, despite the self-consciously 'dumb' approach. Sample lyric:

Got a date
Can't be late
If she don't show up
I'll masturbate

See what I mean? Genius.

The title track consists of the lead singer (Keith Morris, ex of Black Flag) reading out a personal ad looking for swingers over a background chant of "Group... SEX!", which is both as moronic and as satisfying as it sounds.

Fifteen minutes of fun. And what's wrong with that?

Anna - Courteeners

2012TheCourteenersAnna600G141112.jpg

Okay it's not really #43, since I only have 23 albums on my phone so i just continued counting round in a circle (it's 3rd from bottom, #20).
Hadn't heard of them until I went to Boomtown 2013, the guys next to me reckoned they were the best people they have ever seen live. I took note on my 'festival phone' or crack dealer phone. I only saw this note just before NYE 2013, listened to this album and loved them instantly (it may have been a little later than this, the album had just come out). We're actually planning on meeting up again at this years Boomtown.

The next number: 6

number 6 in my list of pc albums is a folder of several different arab strap albums. I've still not listened to all of those tracks. I first heard one of their tracks played on radio 6 a few years ago and really liked it, I'll try to recall what that introductory track was later and post it..

27.

I had quite a crush on Amy. Though less so once she went overboard with the booze, smack and crack.

My number 85 is:

Iggy_Pop-New_Values_%28album_cover%29.jpg

Not Iggy's best, but far from Iggy's worst (that was just around the corner).

The good bits are really good, whereas the bad bits aren't entirely awful, save for the ill-advised ballad, Angel, which just doesn't work at all. Iggy's charm just about makes the rest of the record fun though.

Next up: 29

Having kept every cd since the first I bought in 1991 and still avin em on a wall of towers of thousands and thousands (and still buying hem as I am a technophobe-yeh I have every cassette tape too and a player too) I daren't! I really daren't wish the BF would action his threat to alphabeticalize (yeh I know not a real word but I like it). Oh feck it I might..will do an edit when I can.

But then an edit would feck up the numbers so ignore my waffling..as you were...sorry.

I loved alphabeticising my LPs. Would lovingly spend ages leafing through them, and my singles collection. I once had practically every 7" Queen original release cover single. They were my favourite band in the first half of my teens, until i discovered alt and indie. I had to sell them off ridiciclously cheaply to a record shop on one occasion when i was very skint in my youth. I've regretted that ever since, and a load of other records i had to sell for the same reason, reduced my collection by about 50 % and only got £70 or something for it, when it was worth far more than that. Steppenwolfe originals and other rare things like that, very regrettable sale that was.

MDG are you my ex-husband? ha haa totally de-railing thread..sorry tis is spengly vodka/droog mix..hic and sniff <3

Beastie Boys- Aglio e Olio (EP)

220px-Beastie_Boys_-_Aglio_e_Olio.jpg

Completely different to my preferred instrumental stuff from the Beastie Boys, this is a collection of short sharp loud punk songs, all under 2 minutes. Which is a relief because they are all crap. The opening trace, Brand New is catchy enough, but after 10 minutes of listening to this I want to throw the CD across the room. Fortunately for Mike D and the boys I downloaded via torrent so I am unable to enact my rage in a physical form. 2/10……. and thats being generous.

These songs are apparently out takes from Hello Nasty because they had written too many punk songs to go on that album. Hello Nasty is better for their decision.

Next number…. 221

Estimated 200 and them counted 21, had to go into me press and got Eminem, Encore, didn't even know I owned it.

39 next.

No cd's but in iTunes song 39 would be "I'm the weed man" (go figure lol( by bone thugs n harmony and its off the east 1999 album.

Next: 113

113? That would be:

Killing_Joke_Brighter_Than_A_Thousand_Suns_Cover.jpg

Difficult time for Killing Joke. Lots of corporate pressure. Hence this, a record that was meant to be commercial but didn't sell.

At times it sounds like Duran Duran (which I consider to be a real negative) but the musicianship and arrangements (they have a classical composer and a classical guitarist in the band) win out.

It's depressing, of course. Plus a woman I know described it as "the sound of a man looking in the mirror and putting on make-up", but it succeeds. In spite of or because? Up to you. ;)
