new here and concerned about when my w/d will start

Hi, this is my first post here, but I have been doing so much reading on this site. A little background...I had surgery in June 2013 and got an infection and a wound that opened up so big that a soda can would fit in it. So I have been packing the wound, using a wound vac, and have had 2 additional debridements. Still the wound will not heal.

I was started on Norco 7.5 (12 per day) plus morphine (2 per day). After 4 months I went cold turkey and had the WORST w/d. I thought I was going to die. When I went back to the doc he put me on oxycodone ir 5 mg (360 per month) .

So I decided (after 5 months on the oxy ir)I had enough and took my last pill at 8am Sunday morning. This time I have Gabapentin, trazadone, and ativan (all prescribed). The thing is, besides Monday night having a little anxiety, and a runny nose/sneezing I have had no other w/d. I"m at exactly 72 hours (I live in Germany) and I'm scared....when will the w/d hit me? Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. I just feel like I am waiting for a tsunami to hit.

Why is it taking so long? Is it b/c of the meds I have? I guess I am wondering what is the longest you have heard of w/d starting for someone?

Great job on stopping the opiates.

Most important thing right now is that you take no more of the Gabapentin, trazadone, and ativan than was prescribed.
In 7 days or so you should be over any acute opiate w/ds.

Severity of w/ds is going to vary. Consider yourself lucky and try to make wise choices. Good luck.

sounds very strange re no WD symptoms.
i don't know what to tell u since this isn't "in the book".
there are always WD's with opiates.

i agree you may have waled of scott free, or almost as a short run with the proper medication to detox is often really quite mild. I hope this si the case, but please dont make the mistake that it will always be like this.. you really should have been in withdrawals a while ago. This makes me smile.. now please dont do what allot of us do and dive back in.. cause its really nothing you want to experience. Good to see someone get through comfortably

Was the "WORST wd" your first time WDing?

The first time seems extremely bad because despite being able to list a number of possible symptoms you might get they were only words up to that point. Once they do hit it's really quite awful - physically and mentally. It's possible that since you haven't been using all that long and your doses haven't been too extreme that you were expecting it to be way worse than it really was. Having already experienced WDs before and having a number of aids to help with the symptoms may have been enough to get through it easier than you expected. Hopefully that is the case. I'd be very surprised if they were delayed that long. It just wouldn't make sense.

Well good job so far, seems like you just need to keep doing what you're doing and you should be noticeably better within a few days. Hang in there!



The real important part is to remember how shitty WDs were that first time and how much it sucks to be dependent on opiates/opioids, so you'll hopefully never find yourself in this position again. I realize you needed pain killers for legitimate medical purposes, but now that you have experience with them hopefully you don't go down the soul-crushing road of misery that is chasing the opiate high.

Thanks for all of your replies! I'm at 96 hours now. No w/d's except my legs are bothering me just a tiny bit. I'm feeling really shitty because I had a gastroparesis flare up last night, but it was just my normal flare up, nothing to make me think it was related to w/d.
Yes, the "worst w/d" was my first.
Could I just be delaying the w/d because of the meds?
Totally, I will ALWAYS remember how bad that first time was and not pick up another opiate!

Wow 96 hours, that's a good mark to be at! I would think things would be returning to normal a little bit more each day from here on out. I don't think the meds you're taking would be delaying the WD, moreso just masking the symptoms, so that it was more bearable.

Just be careful to not overuse the meds you're using for the WD. Since you're prescribed everything you're taking then I think you'll be alright. It's just that people with opiate dependency will sometimes just replace the addiction with something new once they get off opiates. If it's something like benzo's, the addiction will sometimes start during WD as people keep taking them even after the WD has passed. I feel like this is less likely to happen if you're under the supervision of a doctor. Well I guess it depends on the doctor. Anyways, it sounds like you should be alright. You seem to be doing really well, so just keep doing what you're doing! :D
