Aminorex, a metabolic of the cocaine adulterant levamisole, exerts amphetamine like actions at monoamine transporters. Hofmaier T et al. Neurochem Int 2013 Dec 1 [Epub ahead of print]

Abstract

During the last decade, many shipments of cocaine seized by U.S. drug authorities have been found to be adulterated with levamisole, a veterinary anti-worming medicine. The drug in the past has been used to treat various medical conditions in humans, but was withdrawn from the market because of significant adverse reactions. Levamisole has also been associated with the occurrence of agranulocytosis and dermal vasculitis in drug users exposed to tainted cocaine.

This laboratory study helps suggest why levamisole is so often used as a cocaine adulterant. The authors point out that levamisole is metabolized to form aminorex, and amphetamine-like drug that had been marketed in Europe as an appetite-suppressant and weight loss drug until it was found to cause vasoconstriction and pulmonary hypertension.

It has been speculated that levamisole and/or aminorex may enhance the effects of cocaine. The authors set out to examine what effects levamisole and aminorex have on neurotransmitter transporters and levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.

Using techniques too detailed to go into here . . . okay, who am I kidding. Not being a lab person, I found it impossible to follow the methods section, so I’m taking the authors somewhat on their word. However, their results are consistent with previous literature on the subject. They found that levamisole itself produced similar, though relatively weak, effects to those of cocaine, inhibiting reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine (and, to a lesser extent, serotonin). In contrast, aminorex strongly inhibited uptake of dopamine and norepinephrine while increasing release of serotonin. This total effect of increasing levels of catecholamines in the synapse may enhance and prolong the effects of cocaine itself.

I wonder what underground chemist first figured this out.

Mystery not solved. If that were their intention, they would've switched to a safer adulterant as soon as the bad press about agranulocytosis hit. This bad press has surely cost them billions of dollars, and they still haven't stopped putting levamisole in it. Certainly they have a very good reason to keep adding it.

I always thought it must have just been a cheap adulterant that was hard to identify by eye (as opposed to other cuts which may cause extra water absorption/dampness/colouration/more or less density).

^ not to mention that it remains in the coke after it is converted to freebase (if I recall correctly).

What is it with animal worming drugs being used or misrepresented as popular psychoactives?
I'm looking at you (in horror!) piperazine.

We'll probably start seeing strychnine popping up as a meth adulterant or something next.

I don't think piperazines are *that* bad. :P

I've had a good number of ecstasy that contained an unknown piperazine rather than any MDMA at all, and although it obviously pales in comparison to the real deal, it still provided a decent buzz. MDMA would be preferably, but if left with nothing else I wouldn't mind a few pips.

IMHO the reason they use it is it has the same damn shine and similar texture as good iridescent coke and any insignificant nero boosts were accidental. If they wanted a stronger product why not cut it less.. Im really not buying this one and since the coke producers dont even seem to be sophisticated enough to synthesize their own Diethyl ether once it was taken off the market because of its common use to enhance cocain. I have to wonder how they would have known about the levas properties and why they chose to take a possible slight increase in nero manipulation as a trade for destroying customers and likely chasing away business by bad word of mouth and press and a product presented itself to me as pretenda blow.

Do you think they really saw billion dollar losses? Hell, I doubt even the corner guy saw much of a loss.

The same can be said about heroin cut with fentanyl analogs -most people aren't going to stop using because their dope may be cut with it.

I'd probably wager the drop off in US use is due to product being moved in larger quantities to non-us markets, where it's probably more profitable. Cultivation hasn't dropped off that much since 2007, and even if it did, they have room to adjust prices to keep their profit margins in line with previous years.

I just think the use drop off due to levamisole is about as likely as a drop off due to LE. :D

Interesting, i was under the impression they used it bc its cheap and cooks up in freebase where as a lot of cuts get removed when you cook it. Back in the days you could tell how good the product was after cooking by weighing the remaining product, if you lost a lot of product then it was more cut up. Less product loss means better quality. Someone posted a link to a lab report of a seized crack pipe and the residue was like 50 some % levamisole. I think the whole physiological thing with neuro release is just a coincidence. I wonder if anyone ever shit out a dead intestinal worm from doing a bunch of crappy levo coke lol maybe it only works on cattle and other livestock. So does levamisole really look like "fishscale" coke? I know there is some kind of cut that makes the coke shine and look pearlescent, i always thought it was some kind of lactose preparation. There was a guy the dea nabbed a few years ago and that was his biz, selling the specific cut that made the coke look like that.

leamisole /=/ BZP/TFPP

Is it only found in coke that went thru Mexico? I got some in Jamaica that was a solid fishscale chunk of really good stuff, but who knows. I know my town in Canada seems to have really crappy powder, and I don't like mystery powders. I don't really want animal dewormer. Maybe it is the DEA doing it. PMA scared me away from MDMA. Posioned drug supply stories scare me away from drugs so it might be a tactic for them.

No shit - that's already been mentioned.
The point I was making is still valid though.
Frankly I don't give a shit what's in 'ecstasy' pills (besides PMMA).
MDMA is the most overrated drug there is IMHO.

A smuggling tactic? We all know that they are always trying something new and they ARE adding it at the source level.
Does levamisole mask odor/confuse dogs noses?
Is it a deworming chemical because dropped tons of coke set to go overseas are somehow being ravages by a creature/organism/mold that is somehow hindered by levamisole?
I always imagined since it is such ab obviously strange cutting agent that it is used to mark and track cocaine for cartels.
Apple will keep track of gow many iphones are in use in certain areas to better decide where to open up their next apple store or supply third party businesses in the area
.. Are the cartels that extract/cut/smuggle cocaine using this chemical so that sample amounts can be purchased by their statesidecartel members to have tested to guarentee high market areas and/or to see how easy it would be for their organizayion to setuo shop and take ownership of a city/state/provinces cocaine market.

This is what I've been saying for years.

Google cocaine smuggled in fish. They do it all the time.

As far as I know this is old news lol have read plenty of threads on here from a while ago discussing stimulating properties of lev.

This info has actually kept me from ingesting cocaine on many occasions.

I could be wrong, but I think this is the first confirmation of levamisole as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor. This activity had been theorized because it is metabolized to aminorex.
