Any novel ideas for hobbies?

Hunting, fishing, shooting at a range, gardening, classic sports like soccer, basketball, tennis, table tennis, boxing or mma...

Martial arts is good like muay thai, krav jiu jitsu and I agree with flyhighk shooting in a range is pretty cool too.

Handball! It's like racquetball but with a smaller slightly harder and heavier ball you hit with your gloved hands. Even if there's nobody else around to play with, practicing against yourself is still a far less boring way to do cardiovascular exercise than anything else I can think of. It's probably the most demanding game on hand-eye coordination there is, it only requires one other person, and can potentially be played anywhere there's three or more walls at right angles. Plus there's minimal initial investment and low risk of injury. Your hands will be swollen for a few games but will quickly adapt after that.

take some glances from the Winter Olympics. Its fun to break down an athletes "performance".
You can go up in ability by doing some earlier stuff that's been proven to work.
You should read High Performance Sports Conditioning by Bill Folan.
Do what someone posted above, but before you do it, do baseline fitness testing to see your level of aerobic functioning, anerobic ability, your sport specific movement range in terms of your bodies flexibility.
After a month of doing exercise's from an untrained state you will make the most gains in that period of time ever.

google baseline fitness testing.

Depending on your concept of exciting you can enroll in one of the distance degrees that some universities offer (e.g. the Open University of London or something equivalent in the states).
Otherwise platforms such as coursera provides interesting courses on sociology, politics, ecology, etc.
