Misc Is caffeine recreational?

My thoughts exactly, I've drank about 2 cups every hour for about 2 or 3 hours now and I just feel tired but restless :/

I've read that many people experience euphoria from caffeine, could this just be placebo?

Maybe a little bit, but more like some people would just describe that focus as euphoria. Personally I don't really like caffeine, but I can kind of understand why it's so commonly used. Easy stimulation with little noticeable other effects..

Thats a lot of caffeine, a cup has between 80-140 mg depending on the brew. So you have consumed at least 320 mg of caffeine, if you are not use to it that will make you quite restless. Even a full cup of medium strength brew will leave a non tolerance person feeling jittery.

Except the common headaches and nausea reported when taking excessive amounts or discontuing usage.

But when taken at a reasonable dose (100-200 mg an hour, about one cup of coffee) it can be more rewarding than using stronger stimulants with a harsher comedown.

It's also far cheaper and easier to obtain.

I definitely took too much caffeine, but for the sake of exploration it was worth it.

I feel the crash, it goes away when I redose but I feel no euphoria at all. Excessive amounts of caffeine just keeps me awake and prolongs the disphoria.

I'm interested in hearing yoir recreational experiences, good and bad Bluelighters. :)

Caffeine can definitely be recreational, it depends largely on set and setting as well as personal sensitivity and dose level.

^^i guess it depends on your view of recreational..if i go without caffeine for a week or longer and then i take 100 mgs there is a definite mood lift, increased energy and motivation..i wouldnt say its euphoric by any means though..there is no 'i feel good' effects i get from it..

For the first few years I drank coffee on a regular basis -- let's say 13-18 -- I felt a bit of euphoria the first hour or so. Nowadays, in my 20's, I feel next to nothing involving anything euphoric after the initial half an hour. Even then, the type of "euphoria" I know I feel is nearly negligible. Basically, at this point I'm just downing coffee to "unclog the drain" so to speak and remove the morning fog. I do get a minor burst in energy the first couple hours, but it's nothing even compared to a miniscule dose of Adderall or something.

Does something have to be euphoric to be considered "recreational"?
I wouldn't have thought so.
Caffeine is definitely a very widely used drug; usually in a "functional" sense (is this mutually exclusive to "recreation"?) but it depends on the culture.

I've had some African brews that surely had a kick, but I'm not sure i enjoyed it.
Having said that - my morning coffee is something I enjoy on a daily basis.
Is this recreational substance use?

'Tis something of a semantic argument I think.

I see caffeine as a tool for getting shit done. Having coffee with someone is an additional benefit, but that's coffee, not the pure form, as you seem to be asking about...

Caffeine in a pill is the same as coffee, where do you think they extract it from? Coffee and tea leaves.

It helps you stay up, I didn't really feel disphoria. I wss just sleep deprived because of... must I say it?

I took high doses, I beleive lower, frequant doses would be a safer options (like half a cup of coffee an hour untill you feel like you had enough).

I got plenty of sleep if you're concerned, feel nice and refreshed. :)

It's like a stimulant without the high, like gabapentin. The experiences were similar but gabapentin has me very groggy and not quite as alert as caffeine.

I was wondering this myself and i think it must be because my friend drinks coffee or tea like its going out of fashion and chain smokes roll ups or spliffs if he has weed.

Every 20 minutes he expects another cup I think the combo has potentially caused his mental health issues as he has got something wrong with him like some kind of dellusional paranoia .

Caffeine is deffinatly a potentially harmful drug just like anything else i think. It must produce effects similar to anthetamines in some people.

I definitely get a little mood lift/buzz from caffeine. It's not overly strong or anything but it is definitely there.

Drink 5-6 espresso shots and you will have the best time working. I used to work at starbucks and I could just drink w/e for free it was awesome. They even encourage you to drink everything to probably boost production. I used to get a mood boost now its just purely out of habit, I don't get much effects from caffeine anymore unless I drink an absurd amount.

It's mildly for me. A good cup of coffee first thing in the morning gets my mind right. Then a soda or energy drink in the afternoon to keep it going. Too much though and I'm all dizzy and have to sit down lol. Not fun.

Id say more of a social drug though than recreational to be honest but then that probably means the same thing to some/most people anyway ;) !

Yeah thats the way I look at it. Caffeine definitely provides a mood boost and makes socializing more pleasant. So I think that can be construed as recreational. I remember when I got heavy into opiates is what caused me to become a daily coffee drinker. Back then I got a real nice mood life and tons of energy from a cup of coffee. Now with increased tolarance it has become much more subtle, but its still there. I seem notice it a lot more when using suboxone as opposed to heroin.

Caffeine is an adenosine antagonist. From what I see in the papers, this is what probably what causes the stimulant effects on dopamine / norepinephrine. The overall effect is mild and indirect, so it's never going to be very "euphoric" I imagine.

Not that caffeine is completely harmless. There definitely is an addiction, tolerance and withdrawal from caffeine.

But compared to some substance, there doesn't seem to be a huge issues. Certainly other chemicals people use to "get shit done" (say Adderall) have worse problems if abused.

There certainly is much less OD potential. Very few people I imagine think thinks large, jittery doses of caffeine is very pleasant... and a very jittery, stomach wrenching dose is considerably less than what you need to be killed by caffeine.
